Step 1 - Reading

Jason’s timetable

You are going to read a text about Jason’s timetable.

  • Read the text. While reading, think about the following questions:
    • Do you know what all the names of the subjects mean? If not, look them up.
    • Are there any subjects that Jason has that you don’t have?
    • Are there also subjects that you have, but that Jason doesn’t have?

Jason’s timetable

Jason goes to school from Monday to Friday. He has got ten different subjects at his school. Every day, the first period is free. Lunch break is always after the fourth period.

On Monday, Jason starts with History, followed by maths and biology. After the lunch break he goes to chemistry, then economics and he ends the day with self-defense.

On Tuesday, the morning lessons are languages, art and chemistry. In the afternoon Jason has biology and technology. Just as on Monday, he ends the day with self-defense.

On Wednesday Jason’s school day starts with maths, followed by economics and self-defense. After the lunch break Jason has history and languages. At the end of the day he has his favourite subject, P.E. - which is short for physical education.

On Thursday morning his timetable starts with biology, chemistry and P.E. The three lessons in the afternoon are technology, maths and art.

Friday is the last school day of the week. The morning lessons start with history, art and P.E. After lunch break Jason goes to languages and technology. He ends his school week with economics.

Do the exercises.

Step 2 - Listening

Healthy lunch ideas for school

You are going to watch a video by Aspyn Ovard about healthy school lunches.

  • Watch the video.
  • While watching, think about the following questions:
    • Which of these lunches do you like best?
    • If you were to bring these lunches, would you be eating more healthily than usual?

Do the exercise.

Step 3 - Vocabulary

To be able to do all the assignments correctly, you need to know some words and sentences.
For each theme there are word lists ready in Wozzol, with which you can practice:

Woordenlijst: My timetable hv12

  • Study the vocabulary. (10 minutes)
  • Do the exercise.

Tip!
There are many ways to study vocabulary. You can read the words aloud or copy them. The most important rule is never to spend more than 10 minutes studying words. Every minute you spend longer is a waste of time.

Step 4 - Grammar

Om te vertellen over dingen die al zijn gebeurd, gebruik je in het Engels de past simple.

We waited for an hour. – We hebben een uur gewacht.
I looked really good. – Ik zag er heel goed uit.
Did you brush your teeth? – Heb je je tanden gepoetst?
Sam didn’t like the salad. – Sam vond de salade niet lekker.

Bestudeer uit de Kennisbank het onderdeel Past simple – regelmatige werkwoorden. Denk na over deze vragen:

  • Wat zet je achter een (regelmatig) werkwoord om er een past simple van te maken?
  • Maakt het uit welk persoonlijk voornaamwoord (I, you, he, ...) ervoor staat?
  • Welk woordje gebruik je aan het begin van een vragende zin in de past simple?

Past simple - regelmatige werkwoorden

Do the excercise.

Step 5 - Speaking

Your school day

Have two conversation with a classmate. Use the Speech cards.

Practise your conversation at least twice.
Persoon A: Speech card - persoon A.
Persoon B: Speech card - persoon B.

Preparation

  1. Prepare for both roles.
  2. Write down a couple of words and phrases to help you during the conversations.
  3. Practise both your conversations at least twice. Switch roles for the second conversation.
  4. Pay special attention to the correct use of question words. Check the theory in the Toolbox if necessary.

Having the conversations

  1. Find another pair to work with.
  2. Have your two conversations.
  3. Ask your classmates to write down feedback for you.
  4. Next, let them have their conversation and write down feedback for them. Pay special attention to the correct use of question words.
  5. Discuss what went well and what you can do better next time.

Step 6 - Writing

A diary entry about your timetable

You have studied Jason’s timetable and you have talked about timetables in Speaking. Now you are going to write an entry in your diary about your own timetable.

  • Give a short description of your timetable.
    • Do you have long or short days?
    • What are some of your subjects? Name at least three and say how often and/or when you’ve got them.
    • When is your lunch break?
  • Explain what your favourite and least favourite subjects are. Give reasons.
  • Give your opinion about your timetable. Support your opinion with three examples from your timetable. For example, are there days which start too early or finish too late? Are there days with only your least favourite subjects? Etcetera.
  • Describe your lunch breaks. What do you do, what do you eat and where does your lunch come from?
  • Finally, explain who your tutor is and what you think of them.
  • Ask your teacher how many words you have to use.

Step 7 - Evaluation

What have you learnt in this double period?
Answer the following questions:

  • What was the easiest part of this lesson?
  • What did you already know?
  • What was the most difficult part?
  • What was new to you in this lesson?
  • Are there things you don't quite understand yet? How are you going to deal with them?
  • What do you need to ask your teacher?
