Introduction

Lesson aims and goals:

You can match at least 8 English words with the correct picture:

  • You have learned at least 8 English words that have to do with school.
  • You know how those English words are spelled.
  • You can put those words in context.

You can use two of the structures taught correctly:

  • You know the differences in the structures.
  • You know why and when you should use which structure.

You can write a letter of application using the right vocabulary and structures previously taught.

Assignment 1 Vocabulary

When you click on the link below you will go to a website with vocabulary exercises. Do all three exercises.

Group 1: You can discuss your answers with your neighbour. Look at each others answers and compare them. What is the same, what is different?

Family

 

Tell each other about your family. How many brothers and sisters do you have? How long have your parents been married? If you have a boy/girl-friend, what is their family like?

 

Examples:

 

I have two brothers and one sister.

My boyfriend’s family is always very nice to me.

My parents are celebrating their 30th anniversary today.

My family is the best!

 

School

 

Tell the other about school. Do you like it? Do you like the class? Is it a lot of work, or are you able to deal with it? How are the teachers?

 

Examples:

 

I like our study, but I think it’s a lot of work to do.

I don’t like our teacher for English, he/she is always making silly jokes.

I like our class, we get along really well.

 

Right now

 

Describe what is happening in class or outside of class right now. Each say one thing at a time.

 

Examples:

 

She is wearing very pretty shoes.

A man outside is throwing garbage in a garbage bin.

The teacher is working on his laptop.

That girl is smoking a cigarette.

 

Hopes and Dreams

 

What are your hopes and dreams for the future? What do you want to do one day? What wishes do you have?

 

Examples:

 

I want to travel around the world one day.

I hope my grandfather gets better. He is feeling sick at the moment.

I am going to set up my own business when I am older.

 

Favourite celebrity

 

Who is your favourite actor/singer/sports(wo)man? What do you like about this person? What makes him/her so talented?

 

Examples:

 

I love Jim Carrey, because he is always so funny.

Ariana Grande always makes the most beautiful songs.

Tony Hawk is still doing the best tricks in the world, even though he is getting old.

 

Happiness

 

What makes you happy? What brings you new energy? What are some of your favourite activities?

 

Examples:

 

I get happy when I walk outside with my dog.

Going out with friends always makes me happy. We’re always having fun.

Most of the time I watch films or series. I’m married to Netflix.

 

Social media

 

Do you use Social Media a lot? Which ones do you use (Facebook, Instagram, SnapChat)? What do you like about Social Media and what do you not like?

 

Examples:

 

I use Facebook and SnapChat a lot.

I don’t like all those filters on SnapChat. They make you look so weird.

I think Instagram is great because of the beautiful pictures some people post.

 

 

Assignment 3 Writing

Writing Assignment: Letter to a family member

 

Before you start: Check the rubric, so you know exactly what is expected of you.

 

Time to put everything you’ve worked with today together.

 

You are writing a letter to a family member (uncle or aunt) in Canada. You would like to visit them during the summer vacation and ask if this is possible. You will have to include:

 

  • A greeting (see stones)

 

  • Ask how the family is doing and tell them how you are doing right now.

 

  • Tell them about your plan to visit them during the summer vacation. Ask them if it is possible to stay with them. Tell them how long you would like to stay and what things you’d like to do while you are there.

 

  • Thank them for their help and that you can’t wait to see them.

 

  • End the letter with a goodbye (see stones)

 

100 – 150 words

30 minutes

 

When you are finished:

 

Think of something you can do. It has to be linked to English or the English Speaking World. Ask the teacher for permission; he will decide if you are allowed to.

Extra tips:

 

Use the guide and the stones.

Don’t use the same words over and over again.

Writing Assignment:  Job application

Before you start: Check the rubric, so you know exactly what is expected of you.

Time to put everything you’ve worked with today together.

You just graduated from college. You are applying for the job of Teacher Assistant in an elementary school in London. You’re going to write a motivation letter to your future boss. You have to convince them that you are the perfect person for the job. You will have to include:

  • A greeting (see stones)

  • Why you want this job; what this job means to you.

  • Why you deserve this job (your diploma, strengths, motivation)

  • Thank them for their time and for giving you a chance. Say that you will be looking forward to their reply.

  • End the letter with a formal goodbye (see stones)

130 – 180  words.

30 minutes

Extra tips:

Be polite and formal.
