Do the following exercise to find out!

Exercise:Need to know

To do

At the end of this theme you:

  • will have listened to people talking about press and media;
  • will have read texts about different media (press included);
  • will have written a short newspaper article and more about press and media;
  • will have talked about media and your favourite tv programme/newspaper etc.

But you don't have to be able to do this right away!
If you take the following steps you'll find out what you need to know!

Listening

Introduction

In this part you will practise your listening skills. There are different listenings, but they are all related to press and/or media. There are listenings on:

  • The British media (What media are popular in the UK?)
  • Where do people get their news?
  • Facebook
  • Paparazzi (song by Lady Gaga)

By listening to English (and doing many exercises) frequently you will improve your listening skills and your English!

Good luck!

British media (1)

In this section, you're going to watch to a video on media in Great Britain. Read the following questions:

  1. Which five media are mentioned? Write down key words (in English) you hear for each of the five types of media. The following worksheet may help you. You don't have to print the worksheet; you can also copy it in your notebook.
  2. Do you see any changes in media between the time the video was made (+/- fifteen years ago) and now? What changes?

Now watch the video and answer questions 1 and 2 while watching.

British media (2)

You are going to watch the video again to understand it better.
You watch until 3:02 and answer the following questions.

Exercise:British media

Where people get news (1)

Where people get their news
is all around us. You get new pieces of information every day!

Before you move on to the listening exercise itself, make a word web about 'news'. For an example of a word web, look at the picture.
You will be working with a classmate.
Together you try to beat another team of two.

  1. Look for a teammate.
  2. Look for a competing team. Both teams work separately.
  3. Write down the word 'news' in the middle of a sheet of paper.
  4. Set a timer for two minutes.
  5. Start the time and start writing down words related to 'news'.
  6. Time's up! Compare word webs with the other team.
Cross off the words that other teams also have. Which words are left?

Where people get news (2)

You will now be ready to listen to some people talking to each other about where they get their news.

Listen to the audio and write down all sources of news you hear (e.g. television).
Hint: there are five different sources mentioned in the audio.

Ready to listen? Click on the link to start.

You are now going to listen to the audio again.
This time, you match the different speakers to the sources of news they use.

Exercise:Where do people get their news?

Where people get news (3)

Language work
You are now going to write similar (soortgelijke) sentences about your preferred sources for news. Imagine (=stel je voor) someone asked you: 'How do you get your news?'. What would you answer?

  • Choose three out of the seven words/sentences in italics (schuingedrukt) to answer this question for yourself.
  • Write your answer down in your notebook.

Facebook (1)

Facebook is an example of a 'social networking website'.
Do you know other social networking websites? Which? Do you use them?

Together with a classmate, make a list of social networking websites you know and write for every social networking website you know what you think its target group (=doelgroep) is.

  1. Which social networks do you know?
  2. Which social network do you use? Why?

Listen to the audio fragment and answer the questions below.

3. Which three social networking websites are mentioned?

4. What target groups (doelgroepen) are these three social networking websites for according to (=volgens) the speaker?

5. Are the social networking websites and their target groups as mentioned in the audio the same as the ones you wrote down?

Facebook (2)

Before listening to the audio again, do the following exercise to prepare yourself. Find the meaning of the given word(s).

Exercise:Facebook

Facebook (3)

You're going to listen a second time now.
This time you listen to the complete audio.

Answer the following questions in your notebook.

  1. Neem de onderstaande zin over en vul de open plaatsen in.
Apart from being social spaces, where you can (a) ……………… and (b) ……………… to people, (c) ……………… and other things, they´ve all added new verbs and nouns to the language in the past couple of years.
  2. Welke social networking websites hebben wél en welke niet voor nieuwe 'verbs and nouns' in de Engelse taal gezorgd?
  3. Welke vier betekenissen heeft het werkwoord (=verb) ´to facebook´?
  4. Welke betekenis heeft 'to comment someone'?
  5. Wat betekent de zin 'I haven't facebooked yet'? Waarom sluit de spreker hiermee af?

Facebook (4)

Discuss:

Ken jij zelfstandige naamwoorden of werkwoorden in de Nederlandse taal die voortkomen uit social networking websites? Welke? Zijn deze woorden al opgenomen in het woordenboek? Denk je dat dat gaat gebeuren?
Waarom wel of niet?

Paparazzi (1)

Paparazzi
In this section, you are going to listen to a song by Lady Gaga on 'Paparazzi'.

  • Do you know who/what paparazzi are?
  • What do you think of paparazzi?
  • Do you think they just do their jobs or are they a bit too nosy (= bemoeierig)?
Before you listen, you are going to do the following exercise to get to know some words from the song.

Tip: Write down words you find difficult or do not know in your notebook!

Exercise:Paparazzi

Paparazzi (2)

  • Download the worksheet.
  • Work with a partner and find out the right order of the sentences.
  • Some sentences are already in the right order (right hand side of the sheet).
  • Look at the rhyme scheme (A-A, B-B, A-B-A-B)
  • After completing the worksheet, listen to the song and check your answers.

Paparazzi (3)

You have now listened to the song.
You can listen again with the lyrics next to it if you like.

What do you think of the song?
What do you think Lady Gaga wants to say with the song?
