Critical AI Literacy

Introduction to the Critical AI Literacy Module

Welcome! This module is designed to help foster a critical and reflective mindset regarding novel AI technologies, with a specific focus on text-based generative AI technologies such as ChatGPT.

The module should take approximately 2 hours to complete, and aims to help you get a better understanding of the terminology, workings, limitations, (ethical) implications, and possible applications of novel AI technologies. It will not prescribe whether and how you should use these technologies, but should enable you to make informed decisions for yourself regarding your involvement with new AI technologies.

Learning outcomes

After completing this module, you…

  • …can explain the basics of what Generative AI is;
  • …can critically reflect on how Generative AI works;
  • …can evaluate some of the ethical implications regarding the use of generative AI models;
  • …can describe what some applications and conditions for the responsible use of generative AI models are.

The following questions are discussed in this module:

  • What is AI?
  • How do generative AI models work?
  • What are the limitations of generative AI models?
  • What ethical implications exist surrounding the use of generative AI models?
  • What are some applications, considerations, and conditions for the responsible use of generative AI models?

If after completing this course you find yourself wanting more information about AI and its use in education, please visit our EDU Support page on this subject (https://edusupport.rug.nl/ai).
