‘’Much’’ is used when talking about uncountable nouns (things you can’t count individually, niet-telbaar). You use ‘’much’’ to show a large amount of something.
When to use ‘’much’’:
With uncountable nouns (e.g., water, sugar, information).
In negative sentences and questions.
Example sentences:
I don’t have much money.
‘’Money’’ is uncountable because we talk about it as a whole, not in individual units. We use ‘’much’’ in a negative sentence to show a small amount.
How much sugar do you want in your coffee?
‘’Sugar’’ is uncountable because we don’t count each grain of sugar. We use ‘’much’’ in a question to ask about the amount.
There isn’t much time left.
‘’Time’’ is uncountable because we don’t count time in whole numbers like 1 time, 2 times. We use ‘’much’’ in a negative sentence to show that only a little time is left.

‘’Many’’ is used when talking about countable nouns (things you can count one by one, telbaar). You use ‘’many’’ to show a large number of something.

In negative sentences and questions (but it can also be used in positive sentences).
Example sentences:
How many apples are in the basket?
Apples are countable because you can count them separately (1 apple, 2 apples, etc.). We use ‘’many’’ in a question to ask about the number.
There aren’t many chairs in the room.
Chairs are countable because you can count them one by one. We use ‘’many’’ in a negative sentence to show that there are only a few chairs.
Why ‘’many’’ is used:
It shows the number of things that can be counted separately.

A lot of
‘’A lot of’’ is used when talking about both countable and uncountable nouns. It means a large quantify or number of something.
When to use ‘’a lot of’’:
With uncountable nouns in positive sentence (e.g., water, sugar, information)
With countable nouns in positive sentence (e.g., apples, books, chairs)
Example sentences:
I have a lot of friends.
Friends are countable (1 friend, 2 friends, etc.). We use ‘’a lot of’’ to show a large number of friends.
There isn’t a lot of water in the bottle.
Water is uncountable because we don’t count individual drops. We use ‘’a lot of’’ in a negative sentence to show a small amount.
Do you have a lot of homework today?
Homework is uncountable because we don’t count it as (1 homework, 2 homeworks, etc.). We use ‘’a lot of’’ in a question to ask about the amount.
Why ‘’a lot of’’ is used:
It works with both countable and countable nouns.
It is commonly used in positive sentences but can also be used in negative sentences and questions.
It is more informal compared to ‘’much’’ and ‘’many’’.

Schrijf drie zinnen voor elke quantifier: much, many, en a lot of. Zorg ervoor dat je de juiste quantifier kiest, afhankelijk van of het zelfstandig naamwoord telbaar of ontelbaar is. Hier zijn voorbeelden:
