A. Past Simple: How and Why?
We use the Past Simple ...
- for Events and actions started in the past that are finished already
- for Events and actions in the past that have no connection to present circumstances
- in combination with finished time words, such as : yesterday, last week, two days ago, in 2015
Examples : I saw that new film last week.
Susie had a very bad cold last month.
He bought lots of tissues for her.
B. Present Perfect : Where and When?
We use the Present Perfect...
- for Events and actions that began in the past and are not finished yet
- for Results of a past actions that are still visible in the present
- to talk about something that happened in the past, but we do not know exactly when
- often in combination with unfinished time words such as : for, since, yet, never, ever.
Examples:
She has lived here for five years (= and she is still living here)
I haven't been to Northern Ireland yet (= I might still go there in the future )
She has broken her leg (= so she can't join our ski trip to Switzerland)
I have painted the wall (= this is visible now)
Have you heard the news yet? (= time is not important )

Rubric Writing Plan
Examples and Resources
Email structure:
The first thing you need to know is the different parts of an email, and these are:
- Greetings: we greet the other person (i.e. say “hi” or “hello”).
- Opening paragraph: we react to the other person’s news and ask them how they are feeling and whatever else you feel is appropriate.
- Main paragraph 1: in this paragraph we deal with the first important point, which we can identify in the instructions.
- Main paragraph 2: if there is a different point to deal with, this paragraph will do so.
- (We might have more main paragraphs, depending on the task.)
- Closing paragraph: in this paragraph we “start” to say goodbye by wishing the other person well and asking them to reply to your email.
- Goodbye: we use a short expression to say goodbye.
- Signature: we sign the email with our name.
Short text structure:
Example : You have lost your jacket at the cinema yesterday. Write a notice to put on the wall of the lost and found room.
In your notice, say:
- what your jacket is like
- where you last saw it
- how people can contact you
-any other information you consider relevant to share
TEST TIME: Writing a short text about a recent event
Welcome to the Test!
Please read carefully the instructions before you start:
What? Write a text of 5 paragraphs about an event that happened in your life (it can be a real or a fictive event).
How? You will work alone, not with your neighbour.
The text will be written according to the WRITING PLAN you prepared at the Test Preparation page. Requirements:
it has to contain at least 5 paragraphs, with 5 or more Past Simple and 5 or more Present Perfect verbs, preferably irregular; with finished and unfinished time words.
Help? If you need help, you can consult your scheme and the materials in this wikiwijs page
Time: You have 30 minutes to write your text
Result: The mark of this assignment is decisive for your semester's result
Finished? When you are ready, please submit the text and I will correct it.
If you still have time, spin the wheel and check your understanding of the tenses we covered in this lesson!

Rounding up
Soooo, that was one interesting lesson!
One of our goals was to find a method to remember and help your classmates remember how we use the Past Simple and the Present Perfect....
You can do it in 2 ways:
1) Write down your own discovery on the PADLET, and don't forget to sign ;-)
OR
2) Play Spin the Wheel with me and explain why you chose that tense
You got 2 minutes for this... GO!
I will give you feedback on the test at the beginning of the next lesson.
You made it, champ!! ;-)

Spin the Wheel for extra practice
