Text 1

Text 2

911 operator

Sara Lewis is a 911 operator.

She is responsible for answering the phone when people call 911.

People call 911 when there is an emergency, which can be a fire, a traffic accident, or a medical emergency.

People who are 911 operators, like Sara, have to work hard and carefully, because sometimes people’s lives depend on their help.

Processing 911 calls is more complicated than you might think.

When you call the number, the operator asks your name, your telephone number, and your address.

As an operator you therefore need to be very precise and quick.

The operator listens to your problem.

Then he or she reads the information back to you.

Next, the operator calls the emergency worker who is able to help you; if you are reporting a crime, such as a burglary, the operator will call the police department; if you report a fire the operator will call the nearest fire department; if you report a medical emergency the operator will call an ambulance service.

Depending on the emergency, the police, a team of firefighters, or an emergency medical team will then be on their way to the scene.

One Man, 52 Jobs

After graduating from college, Sean Aiken knew he would need to find a job soon. The problem was that he wasn't sure what kind of work he wanted to do. One night at the dinner table, his father encouraged him to do what he liked most. His father said he had worked his whole life doing a job he didn’t really enjoy. Aiken wanted a different future. That night, he promised himself that he would find something that he was  passionate about.

Aiken set a goal to work a new job each week for a year. That’s 52 occupations in one year. And he did it! One week, as a dairy farmer, he milked cows every  morning. Then, in another week, he was an astronomer studying the night sky. Aiken’s favorite job, though, was teaching. He learned he was happiest when he was helping others. Aiken also learned that it’s OK to not know what you want to do right away. He wrote a book about his experiences, and today he tells his story to  college and university students. His message? You’ll find your perfect job one day. After all, Aiken found his.

Step 3 - Vocabulary

  • Study the vocabulary. (10 minutes)
  • Do the exercise.

Situation 1: Describe a job

Work together with a classmate. One of you thinks of a job and describes it in English. Make sure you do not mention the job! The other tries to guess what job is described. Once the job has been guessed, you change roles.

The following vocabulary may help you:

  1. I’m a(n) … / My mother is a(n) ………….
  2. My duty is ………… / My duties are …………
  3. I work …………. days/hours a week / My mother works ………….. days/hours a week.
  4. I start work at ……….. and I finish work at ……………. /My mother starts work at …   and finishes work at …….

Step 6 - Writing

  • Introduce the job you are going to write about.
  • What are the requirements of this job?
  • Describe a day at work.
  • Describe the advantages and disadvantages of this job.
  • Conclude with your opinion about this job.

Ask your teacher how many words you have to use.

  • What was the easiest part of this lesson?

  • What was new to you in this lesson?
  • What do you have to ask your teacher?

Step 8 - Extra

Dolly Parton - 9 To 5

You are going to listen to the song 9 to 5 by Dolly Parton.

  • Watch the video.
  • Discuss the song.
What do you like about this song?
What do you dislike about the song?

Lyrics

Tumble out of bed
And stumble to the kitchen
Pour myself a cup of ambition
And yawn and stretch and try to come to life

Jump in the shower
And the blood starts pumpin'
Out on the streets, the traffic starts jumpin'
For folks like me on the job from 9 to 5

Workin' 9 to 5
What a way to make a livin'
Barely gettin' by
It's all takin' and no givin'

They just use your mind
And they never give you credit
It's enough to drive you
Crazy if you let it

9 to 5
For service and devotion
You would think that I
Would deserve a fat promotion
