Introduction

Step 1 - Listening

Matt's dog
You are going to listen to Matt, who talks about his family and their dogs.

  • Listen to the recording.
  • While listening, think about this question:
    • ​Over welke onderwerpen praat Matt? Schrijf er minstens vijf op.

Step 2 - Reading

How much do you know about pets?
You are going to read the text and answer the following questions.

  1. What does the word admit mean?
  2. Why according to the text, do cats meow?
  3. What was special about Laika the dog?
  4. Which animal has the best memory?

Now read the text and answer the questions.

Think you are an expert when it comes to pets? Let’s see if you knew this:
  • Pet lovers have nearly 100 million dogs and cats in the United States, and spend about $35 billion on their furry friends each year.
  • People with pets live longer, have less stress and fewer health problems.
  • 94% of pet owners say their pets make them smile more than once a day.
  • In Australia, England and the U.S., Max is the most popular name for dogs. Other popular dog names in the U.S. are Jake, Buddy, Maggie, Molly and Bear.
  • 95% of cat owners admit they talk to their cats.
  • A cat will almost never meow at another cat. Cats only meow to get our attention.
  • A dog named Laika became the world’s first astronaut in 1957, when Russia sent her into space.
  • Cats have better memories than dogs. A dog’s memory lasts no more than five minutes, but a cat’s memory can last up to 16 hours!
  • Dogs can hear better than human beings. In fact, they hear so well they probably use their ears more than their eyes.

The most important rule is not to study for too long in one go, because you won't learn any more. You will learn more in two 10-minute sessions than in half an hour.

Now you are going to try to have a conversation with someone else.

  1. Find someone to work with and use the speech card A or B on page two.
  2. Write down a couple of words to help you during the conversation.
  3. Practise your conversation at least twice.

After practising twice, do the following things:

  1. Find another pair to work with.
  2. Act out your conversation.
  3. Let them act out their conversation and write down feedback for them.

  5. Discuss what things were good and what you can do better next time.

Step 6 - Writing

An email about your pet.
You are going to write an email to your pen pal from London.
Use the following prompts:

  • Say hello to your pen pal (think of a name).
  • Tell you like pets very much and describe your own pet. (If you don’t have a pet, make one up).
  • Say how old your pet is and where it is kept.
  • Tell about what you feed your pet.
  • Think of a question you could ask your pen pal.
  • Ask if your pen pal likes pets, and if he or she as any pets.

  • End your email.

  • What was the most difficult part?
  • What was new to you in this lesson?
  • What do you have to ask your teacher?
