Project: My future house

My dream home
Vrij schrijven, een presentatie geven over een vertrouwd onderwerp

Make a poster
Work together with a classmate. Make a poster with a design of your future dream house. You are free to design your house the way you like it. Use your imagination; everything is possible.

Sources that may be of use when designing your future dream house are
'Grand designs' and ‘World's Most Extraordinary Homes’ (both to be found on YouTube).

The poster should include:

  • A floor plan of your dream house: ground floor, first floor, second floor (if your house has one) and garden. Names of the rooms should be written in them. You can use floorplanner.com to help you planning your space if you like.
  • Images of what the various rooms will look like (3 pieces of furniture for each room included).
You can use websites like www.designfurniture.com.au to look for pieces of furniture to 'glue' into your rooms.
  • The location of your future dream house.
  • Three main rules to be followed in your future dream house.

Present your dream house
You are going to present your poster to the class.
Tell your classmates:

  • What the house looks like inside and out
  • What the garden looks like
  • What is special about your dream house
  • The rules that have to be followed in your dream house.

Talk for at least 2 to 3 minutes.

Listening to a presentation
Listen carefully when your classmates give their presentations.
For each presentation, come up with at least one question to ask your classmates.
After the presentation two listeners get the chance to ask their question.

You have done a good job if you:

  • made a poster that included all the points from the exercise
  • gave a presentation of 2 to 3 minutes long that included all the points from the exercise
  • were able to answer the questions from your classmates.

Home is where the heart is.

“Home is where the heart is” is a popular saying. I really like this proverb because I believe it is so true. When you are growing up, home is where your family lives. But when you move away, because you go to college or because you’re simply too old to live at your parents anymore, this changes. I left home when I was 18 and slowly my childhood home was no longer. All my stuff was moved to my new home and my old bedroom became a home gym. Now, it’s has complete transformed into my parents’ house and is no longer my home.

Since I’ve left my parent’s home, I have moved around a lot. I only spent a year or so in most places I lived in and, somehow, they never really felt like home.
In my opinion, a home is somewhere you feel totally relaxed and where you want to return to every night. I am moving to a new flat next month and I really hope that place will feel like home. I painted the walls in my new living room my favourite colour and I invested in some new furniture that I really love. So I think that’s a step in the right direction.

The expression “Home Sweet Home” is also true. You have to have nice feelings about the place where you live to call it home. Whenever you come home from a trip you should feel glad to be there again and when you’ve been away from home for a long time you should long for it. That’s how you know your house is also your home.

  1. What does the term childhood home mean?
  2. Which statement is true?
    A. The writer lived in a lot of different homes.
    B. The writer lived in the same home his whole life.
  3. What is ‘home’ according to the writer?
  4. What is the writer going to do next month?
  5. What does the expression “home sweet home” mean according to the writer?
  6. Which three two other terms for ‘a saying’ are used in the text?

Are you a clean freak?

Rina, Canada
Am I a clean freak? Yes, I definitely am a clean freak. I hate it when my place is messy, particularly the kitchen. I especially don't like it when my kitchen is dirty because it makes the whole house look messy. I also appreciate it when other people pay me the same respect and take the time to make sure their place is clean when I come over. I think it's incredibly rude if your place is messy when you have company. It really isn’t that difficult to clean your house. Everybody can do it and if you don’t like to do it you can always hire a cleaner. I can’t stress enough how much I dislike it when my house is messy. It just drives me nuts! I don't know, I just like it clean, tidy and organized.

  1. What does Rina hate?
  2. In which room of the house does she hate this the most?
  3. Why particularly this room?
  4. What is rude according to Rina?
  5. What should you do if you don’t like cleaning your house according to Rina?
