  • Work together with three or four classmates and do exercise 1.
  • Read exercise 2 before you watch the video. Pay attention: There is one question about each speaker.
  • Watch the video and answer the questions.

Oefening 1

Answer the following questions with your classmates before you watch and listen to the video.

  • What do you think about when you hear the words “summer holiday”?
  • What do you usually do during a holiday?
  • Who can think of the most English words that have to do with holidays?

Take three minutes to each make a list. Compare your lists and make a group list with all the words you have come up with. Show this list to your teacher.

Step 2 - Reading

You are going to read a text about a holiday at the beach.

  • Scan the text and do exercise 1.
  • Read the text and do exercise 2.

My summer holidays

Other people might enjoy travelling to foreign countries and exotic place, but those people don’t realise how beautiful the UK is. Every summer, my family and I go on holiday to the same place in Scotland. It’s a little town called Gatehouse on Fleet in the country of Dumfries and Galloway. My parents found this idyllic place ages ago, before I was born and fell in love with the beautiful beaches that can be found along the coast. There is a lovely, little campsite with tents and caravans near one of those beaches, which becomes our home for one month every year.

This particular beach is a quiet place. When you’re there you’ll only hear the rush of the waves and the cries of the gulls. There are always boats floating near the shore and you have a lovely view of the lighthouse. As there are no shops or restaurants nearby, we usually spend our days playing beach games, swimming in the sea and enjoying the sunshine. It’s truly our own little paradise.

I have always loved our family holidays. When I was little, I could run and play on the sand or swim in the calm, clear blue water. Because we stayed on a popular campsite, there were always lots of other families with children to play with. Another one of my favourite activities was climbing the rocks and cliffs around the beach. While out on these little adventures, I would find rock pools which were very educational places. I used to study the little fish and sea animals I found in them. Silence was also an important part of why I enjoyed myself so much; at school I was always surrounded by people and noise but the beach gave me the chance to be on my own and think, or read, away from anyone else.

Oefening 2

Work together with a classmate.
Compare your summer holidays to the holiday described in the text.

  • In what way are your summer holidays similar?
  • In what way are your summer holidays different?

Step 3 - Vocabulary

  • Study the wordlist. (max 10 minutes)
  • Do the exercise.

  • Decide who is going to ask the questions and who is going to reply.
  • If needed, write down some words to help you during the conversation.
  • Practise your conversation at least once.

Having the conversation

  1. Find another pair to work with.
  2. Act out your conversation.
  3. Let them act out their conversation and write down feedback for them.
  4. Discuss what things were good and what you can do better next time.

Step 6 - Writing

Writing a blogpost

You are going to write a blogpost for a summer camp website.

Situation

Last summer you went to camp in England. One of the councilors asked you to write a short blog for the summer camp’s website about your experience.

In your blog write about:

  • when you went to camp.
  • why you decided to go to summer camp
  • how long you were there.
  • what kinds of activities you did there.
  • what you liked about it.
  • Why the reader should also go to the summer camp.
  • Ask your teacher how many words you have to use.

Watch the video for Listening again or look up summer camps on the internet for inspiration.
