Step 2 - Reading

You are going to read a text about a holiday at the beach.

My summer holidays

Other people might enjoy travelling to foreign countries and exotic place, but those people don’t realise how beautiful the UK is. Every summer, my family and I go on holiday to the same place in Scotland. It’s a little town called Gatehouse on Fleet in the country of Dumfries and Galloway. My parents found this idyllic place ages ago, before I was born and fell in love with the beautiful beaches that can be found along the coast. There is a lovely, little campsite with tents and caravans near one of those beaches, which becomes our home for one month every year.

This particular beach is a quiet place. When you’re there you’ll only hear the rush of the waves and the cries of the gulls. There are always boats floating near the shore and you have a lovely view of the lighthouse. As there are no shops or restaurants nearby, we usually spend our days playing beach games, swimming in the sea and enjoying the sunshine. It’s truly our own little paradise.

I have always loved our family holidays. When I was little, I could run and play on the sand or swim in the calm, clear blue water. Because we stayed on a popular campsite, there were always lots of other families with children to play with. Another one of my favourite activities was climbing the rocks and cliffs around the beach. While out on these little adventures, I would find rock pools which were very educational places. I used to study the little fish and sea animals I found in them. Silence was also an important part of why I enjoyed myself so much; at school I was always surrounded by people and noise but the beach gave me the chance to be on my own and think, or read, away from anyone else.
