Introduction

The subject of this double period is going out to dinner.

  • Make groups of three or four.
  • Discuss these questions in English with your group:
    • Do you ever go out to dinner?
    • If you do, what do you like to order?
    • What is your favourite (type of) restaurant? Why?
    • Together, create a mindmap with English words that youmay find on a menu. Gove yur mindmap four branches: starters, mains, desserts and drinks. Write down 5-8 words per branch.

Ordering a meal

You are going to watch a video about a couple in a restaurant.

  • Watch the video.
  • While watching, think about the following question: If you had to choose between the woman’s complete menu and the man’s, which one would you choose?

The menu

In Great Britain you can often eat well for a good price at a pub. Pubs serve many typically English dishes.

You are going to study a pub menu.

  • Study the menu.
  • While reading, think about the following question: What typically British pub dishes do you see on the menu? Find at least two.

Weet je het nog? Om te vertellen over feiten en gewoonten gebruik je de simple present.

I always brush my teeth in the morning. – Ik poets ‘s ochtends altijd mijn tanden.
Water boils at 100 degrees. – Water kookt bij 100 graden.

Om te vertellen over dingen die nu gaande zijn, gebruik je de present continuous.

I am brushing my teeth right now. – Ik ben nu mijn tanden aan het poetsen.
The water is boiling. Turn off the kettle! – Het water kookt. Zet de koker uit!

  • Wat voor soort tijdsbepalingen verwacht je in een zin met de present simple?
  • En in een zin met de present continuous?

Work with a classmate. Use the speech cards and the menu in Step 2 – Reading.
You and your classmate are at a restaurant and you want to order something to eat and drink.

  1. Prepare for both roles.
  2. Write down some words and phrases to help you.
  3. Practise both conversations. Switch roles for the second one.

Having the conversations

  1. Find another pair to work with.
  2. Have your two conversations.
  3. Ask your classmates to write down feedback for you.
  4. Next, let them have their conversations and write down feedback for them.
  5. Discuss what went well and what you can do better next time.

A restaurant scene

You are going to write a screenplay for a scene in which people visit a restaurant.

Preparation

  • Decide what (type of) restaurant your scene is in.
  • Decide what characters are in your scene.
  • Create a conflict: something goes wrong. What happens?

Writing your script

  • Write a dialogue: what exactly do the characters in your play say?
  • Write stage directions: what do your characters do? What emotions do they show and how?
  • If you need more information, look it up on the internet.
