Step 1 - Listening

You are going to listen to “Wonderful world”, a song by Sam Cooke.

  • Listen to the song.
  • While listening, think about the following questions:
    • Which subjects do you hear in the song? Note them down.
    • What is Sam Cooke saying in this song and what role do school subjects play in his message?

Do the exercises.

Step 2 - Reading

My favourite subject

You are going to read two texts about favourite subjects.

  • Read the texts.
  • While reading, think about the following question:
    • Do Sally and Maria like school? How can you tell?

Sally Reyes
Guess what my favourite subject is in school? It's P.E.! I like it because it’s fun and competitive. P.E. is a time to have fun with friends, and it helps me to stay healthy.
Another subject I like in school is computer lab. I feel relaxed just sitting down, ready to listen and ready to start my assignment or activity. I’m always ready to go in regular classes, too, by the way, but I'm always extra motivated for computer lab. I just like digital assignments better than learning from a book.
School can be hard work, but some subjects can be fun, which makes it easier to deal with. So what are your favourites subjects?

Maria Beas
First of all, I don’t have one favourite subject, I like too many!
One of them is maths. I love taking five-minute tests. It's not easy, but I like a challange. You have to finish 100 problems in five minutes. I also love getting back tests to see if I did OK!
I also love science, because you learn something new every day. My favourite part is when they bring in animals and tell us what they do.
I especially love art, because you get to express your feelings. When you’re happy you can paint a flower or a rainbow. If you’re upset or angry, you can paint a thundercloud with lightning. I guess you get the idea. Well, anyway, thank you for reading my story. Hey, reading! That’s another subject I like.

Do the exercises.

Step 3 - Vocabulary

To be able to do all the assignments correctly, you need to know some words and sentences.
For each theme there are word lists ready in Wozzol, with which you can practice:

Woordenlijst School subjects hv12

  • Study the vocabulary. (10 minutes)
  • Do the exercise.

Tip!
There are many ways to study vocabulary. You can read the words aloud or copy them. The most important rule is never to spend more than 10 minutes studying words. Every minute you spend longer is a waste of time.

Step 4 - Grammar

In de afgelopen blokken heb je kennisgemaakt met vraagwoorden en de past simple. Weet je nog hoe het zat?

Bestudeer uit de Kennisbank de onderdelen Vraagwoorden en Past simple – regelmatige werkwoorden nog een keer.

Vraagwoorden

Past simple - regelmatige werkwoorden

Take the grammar test.

Step 5 - Speaking

An interview about school

Have an interview with a classmate. Use the description below.

Preparation

  1. Prepare for both roles: interviewer and interviewee.
  2. Think of five school-related questions you can ask your classmate. Pay special attention to the correct use of question words. Use at least three different ones.
  3. Write down a couple of words and phrases to help you in your interview.

Having the interview

  1. Find another pair to work with.
  2. Have your interview.
  3. Ask your classmates to write down feedback for you.
  4. Next, let them have their discussion and write down feedback for them. Pay special attention to the correct use of question words.
  5. Discuss what went well and what you can do better next time.

Je interviewt een klasgenoot over school: wat diegene er wel en niet leuk aan vindt en waarom, wat de moeilijke en makkelijke vakken zijn, hoe je daarmee omgaat enzovoorts.

Step 6 - Writing

It should be banned!

You are going to write an opinion piece about your least favourite subject.

  • Start with an introduction. Which subject do you feel should be banned?
  • Give at least three reasons why it should be banned.
  • Describe your past experiences with the subject. Pay special attention to the correct use of the past simple.
  • Explain what is good about the subject and what you could need it for in the future.
  • Think either of another way you can learn that skill, or think of a reason why it’s unnecessary.
  • Finish your opinion piece appropriately.
  • Ask your teacher how many words you have to use.

Step 7 - Evaluation

What have you learnt in this double period?
Answer the following questions:

  • What was the easiest part of this lesson?
  • What did you already know?
  • What was the most difficult part?
  • What was new to you in this lesson?
  • Are there things you don't quite understand yet? How are you going to deal with them?
  • What do you need to ask your teacher?
