Going broke sending the kids back to school? Average cost of school supplies tops $100

By Rebecca Dube

If the words "school supplies" call to mind a few pencils, a notebook, maybe a Trapper Keeper, get ready for the new math: The average K-12* parent will spend $100 per student on school supplies this year, up 12 percent from last year.

And that might be getting off easy. If parents like Kimberly Brown of Salinas, California, bought everything on her child's list, the tab could be as much as $400.

"It seems like it gets more and more and more expensive," Brown told NBC's Janet Shamlian. "It seems like they're asking for way too much stuff."

School supply lists that schools give to parents for fall may include high-tech items like graphing calculators and flash drives; but they also expect parents to shell out for things like staplers, hand sanitizer, paper plates, even ice cube trays.

Teachers say these lists are just suggestions, and they're not required of anyone.

"There's nothing said to anyone who doesn't bring it," teacher Terese Boronda said.

Often, in fact, teachers are the ones who end up spending their hard-earned money on school supplies for their classes.

At Tampa's "Twice As Nice" consignment shop, parents can buy new or gently used school supplies at a lower cost.

Two former teachers opened the store after years of spending hundreds of dollars of their own money on supplies.

"I think people take for granted that it just magically appears in their classroom, but it doesn't," explains Twice as Nice owner Adrianne Wilson.

And school supplies are just part of the back-to-school tab. Add in clothing, shoes and electronics, and the average cost of sending a child to back to class this year is $669.

Do the exercises.

Step 3 - Vocabulary

To be able to do all the assignments correctly, you need to know some words and sentences.
For each theme there are word lists ready in Wozzol, with which you can practice:

Woordenlijst School Supplies hv12

  • Study the vocabulary. (10 minutes)
  • Do the exercise.

Tip!
There are many ways to study vocabulary. You can read the words aloud or copy them. The most important rule is never to spend more than 10 minutes studying words. Every minute you spend longer is a waste of time.

Step 4 - Grammar

Interrogatives (vraagwoorden) zijn woorden waarmee je een vraag kunt beginnen.

Voorbeelden:

What is that? – Wat is dat?
Who are you? – Wie ben jij?

Bestudeer uit de Kennisbank Engels het onderdeel Vraagwoorden. Denk na over deze vragen:

  • Kun je het verschil uitleggen tussen what en which?
  • Kun je nog een voorbeeld bedenken waarin je in het Nederlands een ander vraagwoord gebruikt dan in het Engels?

Do the exercise.

Step 5 - Speaking

Bargaining for school supplies

Have a discussion with a classmate. Use the description below.

Preparation

  1. If you want, you can do some research on the internet on bargaining techniques. You can also use the listening input from step 1 as an example.
  2. Decide on one or more bargaining tricks you want to use.
  3. Write down what you (don’t) want, plus your arguments.
  4. Write down a couple of words and phrases to help you in your discussion.

Having the discussion

  1. Find another pair to work with.
  2. Have your discussion.
  3. Ask your classmates to write down feedback for you.
  4. Next, let them have their discussion and write down feedback for them.
  5. Discuss what went well and what you can do better next time.

Je hebt allerlei dingen gezien die je heel graag wilt hebben voor school – maar alles bij elkaar is het nogal duur. Je gaat daarom proberen je vader of moeder (gespeeld door je klasgenoot) te overtuigen het voor je te kopen.

Gebruik alle onderhandelingstrucs die je kunt bedenken om de ander te overtuigen. Praat ongeveer 2 minuten.

Step 6 - Writing

Write an opinion piece

You have read a text about the rising cost of school supplies. Now you are going to write an opinion piece.

  • Think about the following questions and make notes:
    • What, in your opinion, are school supplies that every student should have?
    • Who should pay for them?
    • How do you deal with parents who can’t afford to buy school supplies for their children?
  • Write an opinion piece, using your notes.
    • Start with a short introduction in which you explain the problem.
    • State your opinion and support it with arguments.
    • Finish with a conclusion.
  • Ask your teacher how many words you have to use.

Step 7 - Evaluation

What have you learnt in this double period?
Answer the following questions:

  • What was the easiest part of this lesson?
  • What did you already know?
  • What was the most difficult part?
  • What was new to you in this lesson?
  • Are there things you don't quite understand yet? How are you going to deal with them?
  • What do you need to ask your teacher?
