Fairy tale families

Introduction

The subject of this double period is fairy tale families.
Het onderwerp van dit blokuur is families uit (teken)films en sprookjes.

  • Make groups of three or four.
    Maak groepjes van drie of vier.
  • Discuss the following questions in English in your group:
    Bespreek de volgende vragen in het Engels met je groepje:
    • Welke (teken)films ken jij waarin gezinnen en families een hoofdrol rol spelen?
    • Welke sprookjes ken jij waarin gezinnen en families een hoofdrol spelen?
  • Maak met je groepje voor één sprookje of (teken)film een 'smoelenboek' waarin je iets vertelt over de belangrijkste personen:
    • Naam en rol: is het de vader, de moeder, een dochter...?
    • Uiterlijk: hoe ziet hij/zij eruit?
    • Is hij/zij een goed of een slecht personage?
    • Schrijf twee of drie woorden op het karakter van de persoon beschrijven.
    • Vertel in het kort wat ze doen en kunnen in de (teken)film of het sprookje.

Step 1 - Listening

Ice Age

You are going to listen to a song from the movie Ice Age 4.

  • Watch the video.
  • While watching, think about the following question:
    • Gaat dit liedje over een 'gewone' familie? Noteer drie woorden of korte zinnetjes uit het liedje waaraan je dat merkt.

Step 2 - Reading

Cinderella
You are going to read the fairy tale Cinderella.

  • Maak een groepje van drie of vier leerlingen. Probeer samen te bedenken hoe het sprookje van Assepoester ook alweer ging. Schrijf een paar Engelse woorden op die je kunnen helpen.
  • Lees het sprookje.

Cinderella

Cinderella was a beautiful girl who lived with her stepmother and her two stepsisters. They were very jealous of her and treated her badly.
They made her work hard: cleaning, cooking and repairing their clothes.

Now, the king of the country had a son, the prince. It was time for the prince to marry, so the king organised a ball. He hoped the prince would find a nice girl and fall in love with her.

All the girls in the country were invited - but the stepmother told Cinderella that she had to stay at home. On the night of the ball, she and the stepsisters left the house in their beautiful dresses. Cinderella was all alone.

She ran into the garden to cry; she was very sad. Then, suddenly, her Fairy Godmother came to her. She turned Cinderella’s old clothes into a beautiful dress.

She also turned a pumpkin into a golden coach, a few mice into lovely black horses and a rat into a coachman. Cinderella could go to the ball, but her Fairy Godmother told her that she had to leave before midnight.

The prince saw Cinderella and thought that she was beautiful. He danced with her all evening. Cinderella thought the prince was very handsome and forgot what her Fairy Godmother had said.

Suddenly the clock began to strike twelve. Cinderella ran out of the palace without saying goodbye. She was in such a hurry that she lost her glass slipper on the stairs.

The prince was in love and wanted to find the girl again, but he didn;t know her name. All he had was the glass slipper. So he ordered his servants to take the slipper and ask every girl in the country to try it on. If the slipper fit, he was going to marry the girl.

The servants came to Cinderella's house. The stepsisters did their best to fit into the slipper, but it didn't work. Their mother tried to keep Cinderella away from the slipper, but that didn't work either.

Cinderella tried on the slipper... and it fit!

The servants took her to the palace. She married the prince and they lived happily ever after.

 

Step 3 - Vocabulary

To be able to do all the assignments correctly, you need to know some words and sentences.

Tip!
There are many ways to study vocabulary. You can read the words aloud or copy them. The most important rule is never to spend more than 10 minutes studying words. Every minute you spend longer is a waste of time.

Have a conversation with a classmate. Use the table below.

Step 6 - Writing

An email about your favourite fairy tale.

You are going to write an email to your pen pal from London.

In your email:

  • Begroet je penvriend(in).
  • Vraag hoe het met hem/haar gaat en vertel hoe het met jou gaat.
  • Vertel dat je dol bent op sprookjes en wat je favoriet is.
  • Vertel over je favoriete sprookje:
    • Wie zijn de hoofdpersonen?
    • Hoe zien ze eruit?
    • Waar wonen ze?
    • Vertel iets over hun familie.
    • Vertel in 3-5 zinnen wat er in het sprookje gebeurt.
    • Vertel hoe het afloopt.
  • Vraag je penvriend(in) naar zijn/haar favoriete sprookje.
  • Stel je penvriend(in) een zelfbedachte vraag.
  • Sluit je e-mail netjes af.
