Today we are focussing on a new grammatical item called the Past Simple.
First off, I made an explanation video for you. After having watched that you can start working on exercises 1 and 2. Depending on how well you did on exercise 2, you will do one more exercise. Once you have done 3 exercises in total it is time to do the practice test. the Formative Test will check and next class you will get your results back. The practice test will not determine anything yet, it is just to see how well you understand the Past Simple until now!
Goal for today's class:
At the end of this class, you know how to form the Past tense of verbs and apply this in your Practice Test in which you score 60% or more.
I hope everything is clear.
You can now start working.
Good luck!

When do we use the Past Simple?
We use the Past Simple when we want to talk about things that happened in the past.
Here are two examples:
I called Peddy, but she did not pick up.
She told me she does not want to go out tonight.
2 kinds of verbs + their form
To be able to use the tense correct you need to know there are two kinds of verbs in the English language: regular and irregular verbs.
Regular verb?
Add +ed after the verb -> seem/seemed
Add +d if the verb ends with -e -> love/loved
If verb ends on a consonant + -y then change -y in -i and add -ed -> hurry/hurried
Irregular verb?
There are no rules to make irregular verbs past tense. Study the past tense forms on page 158, in your students book.
Some most frequently used irregular verbs:
Say/said
make/made
go/went
take/took
come/came
see/saw
know/knew
get/got
give/gave
find/found
Signal words
These words make it clear to you what tense has to be used in a sentence.
Signal words for Past Simple:
yesterday
last week/month/year
a month/ a week/ a year ago
in 2010/2011/1999
this morning
Do we understand the explanation?
To see if you understood the explanation look at the following sentence:
I saw her standing there in the morning.
Answer the following questions for yourself:
1. Is the action finished?
2. Did it happen earlier on the day?
3. Is she still standing there?
Answered the questions....?
....then go the next page.
answers on the questions
1. Is the action finished? Yes
2. Did it happen earlier in the day? Yes, in the morning
3. Is she still standing there? She might be, we cannot tell.
If you answered sentences 1 to 3 correctly, you understand the theory of the Past Simple!
Practice makes perfect
You have completed the explanation on the Past Simple. Now you will go over to practicing.
You should be able to complete the first exercise within 5 minutes, the second exercise in 6 minutes.
I will add a timer to the exercise so you can track the time!
Good luck!
