Binnen toerisme heb je te makken met allerlei klanten met verschillende verzoeken. Tijdens deze les ga je:
- Recensies lezen
- verzoeken van klanten lezen
- Informatie opzoeken online

Je leert:
- Hoe je skimmen en scannen kunt gebruiken voor het beantwoorden van vragen bij een tekst.
- Hoe je woorden die je niet kent snel kunt opzoeken in een woorden boek
- Je leert hoe je iets snel kunt opzoeken online

Opdracht 1: Skimmen

Hier onder staan recencies van 3 bezienswaardigheden in Londen. Bekijk de plaatjes en skim de tekst.
Welke attractie lijkt je het leukst?
Wat zou je een gezin met jonge kinderen adviseren?
Wat zou je een ouder stel adviseren?
Wat zou je een groep studenten adviseren?
Bespreek het met een partner.

Opdracht 3: Woordenboek

Misschien ben je in deze 3 teksten wel woorden tegen gekomen die je niet kende. Als je een woord niet kent kun je:
- De zin waar het woord in staat nog een keer goed lezen, misschien kun je de betekenis raden.
- Kijken of het woord lijkt op een woord dat je kent uit het Nederlands of aan andere taal.
- Als je het woord echt niet kent kun je het opzoeken in een woordenboek.

Wat heb je geleerd van de video's dat je nog niet wist?

Welke video zou je aan je vrienden laten zien als je ze wilde overtuigen naar Granada te gaan? En welke aan je ouders? Waarom?

Opdracht 2: Vakantieplannen

Wat zijn je eigen favoriete vakantiebestemmingen? En wat doe je het liefst op vakantie?

Maak een top 3 van locaties. Welke woorden ken je nog niet om de locatie en om je favoriete activiteiten te omschrijven? Bespreek ze in groepen van 4: zorg gezamenlijk dat je de Engelse woorden kent voor de omgeving en je lievelingsactiviteiten, want we bespreken ze daarna klassikaal.

 

Vervolgens gaan we gezamenlijk luisteren naar 3 telefoongesprekken. In wat voor omgeving staat het hotel? Beschrijf het kort in de rechterkolom. En welke dialoog gaat over welke bestemming? Vul het nummer van het bijbehorende gesprek in in de rechterkolom.

Opdracht 3: Vakantiepitch

Aan het einde van Opdracht 1 heb je al eens gekeken naar waarom je een bepaalde video zou laten zien aan je ouders of je vrienden. Wat vind jij belangrijk om te zien in een video over een vakantiebestemming? Maak een lijst met 5 thema's.

Zoek vervolgens op Youtube een video op over een van de locaties die je bij Opdracht 2 in je top 3 hebt gezet (zoek bijvoorbeeld: "travel [locatie]"). Kijk de eerste 5 minuten ervan. Komen al je thema's langs? Zo ja, wat wordt er over gezegd? Zo niet, wat zou jij erover zeggen?

Lesson 1:

  • The students know vocabulary related to holiday/travel.

Lesson 2:

  • The students know what a correctly structured formal letter looks like and are able to write this individually.
  • The students are able to recognize and correct grammar mistakes in a sentence.
  • The students are able to use grammatical correct sentences when writing a formal letter.

The upcoming two classes will be about vocabulary and grammar.

First, we will kick off with vocabulary and in the second class we will start with grammar.

The goal we are working towards is to be able to write a formal letter in English, in reply to a letter of complaint from one of your customers. You have to bare in mind the previous two lessons, for which you were a travel agency (reisbureau). You are still working at the travel agency, therefore you have to send a decent reply to satisfy your customer. 

We strive to enable you to do so using the suiting vocabulary and the correct grammar after these two lessons.

 

What can you expect?

First class:

Vocabulary is a matter of importance, since we use it every day. In order to become better at it and expand our knowledge of vocabulary, we need to practice. This is exactly what we will be doing during this lesson.

First we will start with explaining about the difference between formal and informal words and how to use the right words in a formal setting. Then, you have to do Assignment 1 from the Vocabulary section below the ''Practice Assignments'' heading. 

When you have finished Assignment 1, you can continue working on Assignment 2 from the Vocabulary section.

 

Second class:

The second class is entirely dedicated to grammar. First we will start off with a ''nulmeting'', using Kahoot!. You have to spot a mistake in a sentence, or you have to find the correct answer to answer a question with. Do not worry about this assignment, we will do this together in class. But do not forget to bring a device such as your mobile phone, laptop or tablet with you since you need to be able to access the internet in order to join.

In class we will hand out a paper with information on how to write a formal letter. This is to practice sentence structures and to repeat the vocabulary you have studied during and after the previous lesson. First we will discuss all of it together. At the end of the lesson you will have to work on another letter individually.

 

Third class:

Written test! You will now be able to write a formal letter in reply to your dissatisfied customer.

Je loopt stage bij het Engelse bedrijf Woolco International in leeds. Er komt vandaag een telefoontje binnen van Maud Billings van Billings&Co. Zij belt voor Gerald Knapp, jouw collega, die vandaag afwezig is. Jij handelt het gesprek af, neemt de boodschap aan (zij is boos dat Gerald Knapp is niet komen opdagen) en stelt vervolgens in correct Engels een brief op voor Gerald. Hierin verwerk je de hoofdzaken uit het telefoongesprek. Gebruik de datum van vandaag.

Introduction

This lesson we're going to work on the final product, writing.
You're an employee of the travel agency Madventurer, two customers have sent inquiries about booking a possible trip.
Your task is to desgin the perfect holiday for one of the two clients with the information they've given you in their mail.
You're allowed to use the internet for research and an online dictionary.

The rubric for the final assignment can be found under 'beoordeling' (see below).

Dear people at Madventurer,

My name is Dylan, twenty-four years old, and I am looking for the a holiday that allows me to explore different cultures and traditions.

My preference goes to a place with lots of celebrations during the summer, for instance some cool festivals.

So far, the only countries I’ve travelled to outside of Europe, are Vietnam, Bolivia and the United States. I am very interested in Asian countries and cultures, like India or Japan.

In my trip, I would very much like to include lots of nature, wildlife and big cities. I also would like to be able to visit any religious sites, such as a temple.

Overnight, I would like to stay in hostels, so I get the chance to meet other travellers.

I have a budget of around €2500,- and would like to ask you to design the perfect holiday for me. As I reside in London, I would like to depart from any of London’s airports. I would like to go for four weeks, either in July or in August.

My name is Zara, I’m a twenty year old outdoorsy girl from Brighton. My passions include extreme sports, hiking and I’m quite the foodie. My friend recently booked a trip with you as well, and he was very satisfied. I prefer colder climates over warm ones, and I’m not interested in shopping or museums.

My main goal is to be as active as possible, no lazy holiday for me!

Places I’ve visited include: Germany, Sweden, France and The Netherlands. I don’t mind long trips, but prefer trains over long flights.

I don’t mind traveling with a group, I think this would be a nice way to meet likeminded people.
