Grammar (1)

To be able to read, listen, speak and write better, you will need to know your grammar! In this theme you are going to repeat or learn more about:

  • The imperative (=gebiedende wijs)
  • The gerund (= -ing vorm)
  • To live, live or life?

For each grammar item, there is an explanation and there are exercises.
Try to do as many exercises as possible!

Grammar (2)

The imperative

De gebiedende wijs (imperative) gebruik je om orders of bevelen te geven.
In zo'n zin staat geen onderwerp. Je gebruikt het hele werkwoord, zonder 'to'.

Voorbeelden:

 

  • Come here.
  • Clean the bathroom.
  • Help your father.
  • Give me that tape, please.

 

Als je jezelf ook aanspreekt, gebruik je vaak 'let's' voor het werkwoord.

 

  • Let's stop now.
  • Let's have some lunch.

 

Om een ontkenning te maken, gebruik 'do not' of 'don't' voor het werkwoord.

 

  • Don't go!
  • Do not walk on the grass.

Grammar (3)

The gerund

Werkwoorden die eindigen op  -ing vorm komen voor bij:

- de present continuous (I am walking)

- de past continuous (I was walking)

- de gerund (Smoking is bad for you.) De -ing vorm is dan een zelfstandig naamwoord.

Er zijn drie manieren waarop een Gerund voorkomt:

1 als onderwerp:

  • Parking is not allowed here.
  • Smoking is bad for you health.
  • Flying is not all dangerous.

2  na een aantal werkwoorden:

  • He really likes running.
  • I enjoy travelling.
  • Stop lying to me!

NB: Andere werkwoorden waarna je - ing gebruikt: love, hate, mind, risk, fancy.

3  na een voorzetsel:

  • Before going home, you must have a look at my new computer.
  • He always talks about moving.
  • Don't cross the road without looking.

Life, live of lives

Weet je wanneer je 'live', 'lives' of 'life' gebruikt?

Kijk naar de voorbeelden. Herken je de verschillende betekenissen?
- Peter lives in Poland.
- Life is short.
- Many people lost their lives in the war.
- It was a live concert.
