Money Matters

Start

Introduction

Dear student,

Welcome on this website. You're about to go on a journey which will broaden and deepen your knowledge on what you learn in Unit 3 of Choices Pre-Intermediate. This website is the base of the lessons, and sometimes you'll have to go back to the books to do some exercises.

During the lessons you get time to work on the exercises on this website, as well as practising listening and speaking.

The objectives of this unit are:

  • listen, read, and talk about money, shops, and markets;
  • write / create your own advert;
  • act out shopping situations;
  • and learn more about the Present Perfect.

Let's get started!

Planning

Your repetition is in the week of 7-12-2015.

You won't get a seperate SO but you'll get marks for the exercises on this website, which together will make up your SO mark.
The exercises that count for this are:

- Reviewing advertisments (10%)     || hand in date is Sunday the 15th of November 2015 at 8pm via Showbie.

- Creating your own advertisment (10%)     || hand in date is Sunday 22nd of November.

- Online shopping (5%)     || hand in date is Monday 30 of November at 8pm via Showbie.

- Final exercise (25%)     || hand in date is Sunday 6th of December.

- The 'Language Check' which we'll do in the lesson on Monday 30-11-2015 (50%).

At the end of this unit, you

  • know how to use the present perfect
  • know vocabulary linked to money and shopping
  • know how and when to use modifiers and adjectives
  • know when to use some, any, a lot of, a few, a little.

Let's get started!

Step 1 - What do you already know?

During this first step you're going to find out what you already know about money and shopping.

Exercise 1:

Make a word cloud and write down all the words you know on money and on shopping. You can make the word cloud using an app you like, or write it by hand and make a picture of that. And if you're very enthusiastic, you can even make a little video with all the words you know. At the end of these lessons, you're going to review your word cloud to add the new words you'll learn.

Upload the word cloud on Showbie before 8pm on Monday 09-11-2015.

Exercise 2 - optional:

If you already want to practise with vocabulary of Unit 3, make exercises 1 - 8 of Topic Talk in MyEnglishLab or download the copy of the work book on Magister (you'll find it attached to the homework of Friday's lesson, the 13th of November)

Step 2 - Reading and reviewing

Exercise 1:

You're going to review 5 advertisments and write a little review about them. The hand-in date is Sunday 15th of November 2015 at 8pm via Showbie. This exercise counts 10% for you SO mark.

Note done for each adverts:

  • Where did you find the advert? (only for your own three adverts)
  • Who published this advert?
  • What is the target group? (Who would buy this product)
  • Does the advert use whole sentences or only some words?
  • If it's written in whole sentences, what tense is used? (Present Simple, Present Continous, Past Simple, etc.)
  • What is the effect of the text, in your opinion?
  • What colours do they use?
  • Would the advert be as interesting with different colours?
  • Would the advert be as interesting with a different font?

Take the following two and search online or in magazines for four more.

1. Lego http://blog.carolinatrainbuilders.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/what-it-is-is-beautiful-450x621.png

2. Nike https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qP1PQDmR9uQ

Here's an example on how to do it:

This advert is from the shop Debenhams in the UK. I found it on the homepage of their website: www.debenhams.co.uk
It aims at parents buying gifts for Christmas.
The heading is not a complete sentence, but the text in the middle is. The text is written in the present simple.
The colours used in this advert are red, black, yellow-ish, and other light colours. This probably resembles the warmth of Christmas. I think that the advert would not be pretty in other colours, as these colours match the Christmas-feeling. What they could have done is using the colour green that is also a Christmas colour. I think it would also be a nice advert in a different font.

Exercise 2 - optional:

If you know that you're having trouble with reading, you can practise with the exercise on MyEnglishLab (Lesson 7 - Skills) or take a look at the website of the British Council: http://learnenglishteens.britishcouncil.org/skills/reading-skills-practice. Look for a B1 or B2 (more difficult) text.

Also, a good way to practise reading is, of course, read an English book. Ask your teachers for ideas of good books if you ran out of ideas yourself.

Step 3 - Create your own advert

Exercise:

Having looked at 5 different adverts, you're going to design your own advertisment for an object of your choice. This exercise makes up 10% of your SO mark. Hand in date is 22nd of November at 8pm.

How you design it that's up to you, as long as you have done the following:

  • You've thought about the target group.
  • You've thought about the colours you use.
  • You've thought about the words you use.
  • You've thought about the font or fonts you use.

Ideas for apps to use:
Canva, PixnTell, iMotion, Skitch, Videolicious, Animoto, AnimationHD Express.

Step 4 - Grammar time!

What is the present perfect again?

Om duidelijk te maken dat iets in het verleden is begonnen, maar nog niet is afgelopen, gebruik je de present perfect (voltooid tegenwoordige tijd).
De present perfect bestaat uit: have/has + een voltooid deelwoord.
Het voltooid deelwoord van regelmatige werkwoorden maak je door '-ed' achter het werkwoord te zetten. De voltooid deelwoorden van de onregelmatige werkwoorden hebben een eigen vorm die je uit je hoofd moet leren.

Voorbeeld:

  • I have played the piano for fifteen years.
Ik speel al vijftien jaar dwarsfluit.

Ook als je wilt zeggen dat iets in het verleden gebeurd is en het resultaat daarvan nog steeds merkbaar is, gebruik je de present perfect.
Het tijdstip waarop het gebeurde is niet belangrijk.

  • I have lost my keys.
    Ik ben mijn sleutels verloren.

Ook in vraagzinnen en ontkennende zinnen gebruik je have of has plus het voltooid deelwoord.

  Vraagzin Ontkenning
I have lived. have I lived? I haven't lived
You have lived. Have you lived? You haven't lived.
He has lived. Has he lived? He hasn't lived.
We have lived. Have we lived? We haven't lived.
You have lived. Have you lived? You haven't lived.
They have lived. Have they lived? They haven't lived.

Step 5 - Let's go shopping!

Exercise 1. Work alone

Go to the following link Reading and do the exercise 'Shopping List'. This is 5% of your SO mark. Hand in date is Monday 30th of November.

Exercise 2. Work in pairs

Do the talk builder on page 27 of your student book ór write your own dialogue, similar to the one in your student book, and act it out.

Step 6 - Vocabulary

Take a look at the vocabulary list in your student book on page 130.

1. Which words did you note done in Step 1?

2. Find the description / translation of the words you're unfamiliar with and practice + learn them.
Pay extra attention to the words under 'quantities'.

3. Go to your word cloud (mind map) of Step 1 and add the words you learnt. Now you have your own vocabulary list of Unit 3!

Step 7 - The final

Combine all the skills you've learnt in this final exercise!
Work in a pair or alone. This makes up 25% of your SO mark. Hand in date is 6th of December.

Choose one of the following exercises:

1. Make a promotion video for your favourite item (shoes, clothes, hockey stick, teddy bear, etc.)
It should last between 1 and 2 minutes.
Use modifiers and adjectives.

2. Interview a classmate, a teacher, a family member, or someone else.
Interview this person about his/her shopping habits.
Page 25 of your student book can give you some inspiration for questions.
Make sure you ask the questions in the present perfect!
Record the interview on audio or video. It should last about 2 minutes.

3. Make a video where you explain the present perfect.
You don't especially have to record yourself on video, you can also choose to work with pictures and record your voice.

4. This unit is about money and stopping. Do you have another idea for a speaking or writing exercise about money, where you can show that you understand the present perfect, modifiers, adjectives, and the vocabulary of unit 3? Go to you teacher and discuss your plan.

Are you ready to take the test?

In the week of 7-12-2015 you'll have the repetition.
One week before, you're going to check in the lesson of Monday 30-11-2015 if you're ready for it.
The mark you'll get for this test counts 50% for your SO mark.

MyEnglishLab you can use to practise more, and your teacher will give you extra ideas as well.

Good luck!
