What do you know about England, the English language, English people and other English speaking countries?

You are going to learn more about them in 'Life and culture'!

In this theme you will look at tourism in the UK and other English speaking countries.
You are also going to listen to a song about cultural differences.

Get started!

UK geography (1)

UK Cities
Do you know some of the biggest UK cities?
Brainstorm with a classmate and try to think of as many UK cities as you know.
Any idea where these cities are in the UK?
Look them up in an atlas or on the internet.
You should now be ready for the 'Cities of the UK quiz'.

Go to the website of Lizardpoint and practise with the geography of UK cities.

Quiz your classmates!

  • Work with a partner.
  • You choose a city from on of the cities you have seen on page 1.
  • Use simple.wikipedia.org and write down three facts about this city.
  • Give the sheet of paper with facts to another pair.

Do they know what city the facts are about?

Possible variety:
The 'fact sheets' go round the whole class.
Each pair writes down the correct cities on a separate sheet of paper
(make sure the fact sheets are numbered).
When all pairs have written all cities for all fact sheets, the teacher will quiz
the class.

Travelling in English

Travelling in English
Of course, English is not only spoken in England.
That is why it is important you learn more about other countries that have English as an official language too. In this section you are going to prepare
a presentation on travelling and holidays in an English speaking country other than England.

  • Choose a classmate to work with.
  • Have a look at a list and map of English speaking countries here at en.wikipedia.org . Choose an English speaking country you want to travel to. Make sure you do not have the same country as another group in your class.
  • Prepare a presentation on tourism in your English speaking country.
    Check the website of lonely planet for instance for inspiration (how to organise information, what to say).
  • The presentation should be in between 1:30 and 2 minutes.
    Make sure both you and your partner present.
  • Finally, vote for the most popular English speaking holiday country in your class.

In Belgium and the Netherlands, we understand each other because we (partially) speak the same language, but our cultures are very different.
The same happens with an Englishman in New York.

Planning a trip on a budget
Situation
After having read about tourism in England in this theme, you and a classmate have become interested in spending your holidays there!
One little problem, your jobs in Albert Heijn have not made you rich yet...
You need to travel on a budget!
Each of you has €500 to spend.

Task

  • You plan a trip to England and make a collage about it.
  • You decide how long for and where to but remember you only have €500 to spend for your whole holiday (i.e. travel, accommodation, food, museums etc.).
  • Make sure the following 'decisions' are visible on your collage:
    • how long you stay
    • means of transport
    • accommodation
    • where you stay (picture of hotel, B and B, etc.)
    • what you are going to do
    • what you will eat and drink
    • prices of everything
