ASSIGNMENTS

1. Schedule a meeting

Christmas is not complete without the Christmas stockings. These are woolen socks you hang by the fireplace and put presents in. Every year, Santa Claus gives all the children a pair of stockings but lately there has been a problem…

The socks are made out of wool and wool is very expensive. Everyone knows about the credit crisis and even in Santa’s Headquarters they have had to cut the costs. Christmas is very expensive.
That is why there is going to be a meeting about the Christmas stockings.
The following ideas will be discussed during this meeting:

- Should we use wool this year, or a cheaper synthetic material?
- Reducing the size of the socks, an ankle-sock instead of a regular sock.
- Giving smaller and cheaper presents to maintain the budget.
- Repurposing old socks.

Santa has asked you to send an invitation to all the elves. The meeting needs to take place within a week and he has already reserved a room for the meeting: The Bell Room.
The meeting will probably take 2 hours.
Write the email with the invitation and send it to the elves.

2. Booking warehouses

We all know Santa takes care of all the children in the world. That also means het has to take care of a lot of presents. But where do you leave all those presents until Christmas Eve?

Santa asks you to search for some warehouses that can store the presents until Christmas Eve.
After a search on the internet, you found a few warehouses that might work:

- Alpine Warehouses
info@alpinewarehouses.np

Alpine Warehouses is situated in the heart of the North Pole, but still very easy to reach from the mainland. Alpine has several different warehouses, from small to large sizes. Save and secure and full insurance for everything that is stored in our warehouses. Easy to reach via train and boat. Costs of a large warehouse: 10.000 euros/ month.

- STOREALOT Warehouses
booking@storealot.np

STOREALOT Warehouses is found near the southern coast of the North Pole with the harbor close by. Located on a cliff, the warehouse offers great storage for all kinds of businesses and a lovely view. Accesible via a small and winding road. STORALOT is known for offering fair prices and all warehouses come including full insurance and a security guard on call 24/7. Costs: 8.750 euros/ month.

- Carrols Co. Warehouses
info@carrolsco.np

Carrols Co. has been a brand name since 1890 and specializes in large warehouses that offer flexible storage options and quality service. Located in the city center of Northian, the largest and only city on the North Pole, and close to the harbor. Insurance is available. Costs: 9.500 euros/ month.

Send an email to Santa telling him the best warehouse option out of the 3 above. Explain why you think this warehouse would be the best choice.

3. A letter to WWF

Above you can see an article that was printed in the local newspaper some time ago. Read the article.

Santa is very upset about the whole thing and asked you to do something.
Write a letter to the WWF ( in this case spokesman Johnny Knoxville) explaining how well Santa has treated his reindeers and how much he loves them. Try to convice Mr Knoxville to allow Santa to use reindeers during Christmas.

Write the letter using 180 words.

4. Replace the reindeers

Since the WWF placed a ban on using reindeers, Santa has to think of another way of transportation during Christmas Eve.
Think of a unique way of transportation for Santa to deliver all the gifts to children from around the world. Do not mind the costs, Santa is quite wealthy!

Make a powerpoint (or prezi) presentation explaining your idea. Include photos and reasons why this alternative transport will work. The presentation should have 6 slides and the total presentation may take no longer than 2 minutes.
You can include the lines you want to tell in the "opmerkingen" field at the bottom of the PP presentation.

5. Create a flight route

Use a world map (from Google) to explain how Santa will be transporting the gifts all around the world. Bear in mind that children in Australia will wake up earlier then children in the USA due to the different time zones.

Below you can see a map of the 12 different time zones across the world. This map can help you plan the route.
The sun sets in the west, which means New Zealand is the first country to go to bed on 24 December 2014. This is where Santa must begin his trip around the world if he wants to deliver the presents before morning.

6. Proposal Christmas Tree

In the main hall there will be a great Christmas tree. Every year it gets decorated by the elves, but everyone has to agree on its design. Santa asked you to come up with an idea for this year’s Christmas tree and make a design for the tree. This year’s holiday theme will be “Pop culture” and the tree should fit in with this theme.

You should find out what kind of colors you would like for the Christmas decorations and include pictures of the decorations with these colors. Also think about other kinds of decorations like lights, pictures, flowers etc. and explain how they will be used in the theme and tree (if possible, find pictures to show how they will be used in the tree).

Write an email to all the elves about your ideas for the Christmas tree, include your theme in it and pictures of the chosen Christmas decorations.

7. Voicemail and memo

Just now you received a voicemail from the Grumpy Elf. Play the voicemail en write down the information.

Voicemail:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After listening to the voicemail, you decide to call the Grumpy Elf back.
You were able to calm him down, but had to promise him you would do something about his complaints. Because you do not want any more elves calling in sick and complaining about the chocolate and candy in the cafeteria, you decide to write a memo about the food. You explain that the elves can also buy healthier food in the cafeteria and how this may be better for them.
Include in your memo examples of healthier food which they can buy.

8. Ho Ho Hold on a minute

Ho Ho Hold on a minute

Besides writing a letter to Santa, you can also call the Santa hotline: 0800 – 225572682 (call santa).
Many people call this hotline and that means that you sometimes have to wait before you can speak to someone. Santa used to have an automated message saying.

“At this moment, it is very busy. Please wait or call again later.”

Recently, there have been some complaints because people feel the automated message is very cold and not very Santa-like.

9. Nice & Naughty list

Every year, Santa makes two lists of children per country. He divides these children into the Nice and Naughty List to tell if they were Nice all year or Naughty.
The elves collect all the information Santa needs about the children, such as their birthday, favorite gift and even the reason why they are on the Naughty List. This way, Santa knows all the children well and can agree or disagree on their gift for this year.

However, one of the elves messed up this year…

The Nice and Naughty Lists for the country Wales were made by the elves, but were not put in to the correct alphabetical order. Santa can not work with the lists when the names are not on alphabetical order, so he asked you to do this for him.
The lists are in an Excel-file below, all the information Santa needs is in there as well. Do remember that all the information has to match the right names!
So when you put the names into alphabetical order, make sure the information given, changes with it as well.

Open bestand Nice and Naughty lists Wales

10. From Naughty to Nice

One of the naughty children sent Santa a letter about his behavior.
Below you can see his letter.

Santa thought that this letter was very nice of him and decided  that Barney can be on the Nice List this year. You will have to delete his name and information from the Naughty List and put it all on the Nice List. Also include his favorite gift. All the other information can be found on the Naughty List.

11. Newborns

Admin Elf just sent you an e-mail about the babies of 2014. He explained that he forgot to put the newborn babies of this year on the Nice list and is asking you to do this for him.

Go back to the Nice and Naughty Excel-file and add these new names underneath the Nice List.
Because they are babies Santa wants you to put them underneath the Nice List under the head “Newborns”. Include all the following information about these babies, and put them on alphabetical order as well.

12. Poem for Mrs Claus

Mrs Claus has been feeling very lonely this year. Around Winter it is always busy for her husband, but this year she has been complaining to Santa that she is "bored" and that she "feels like Santa does not love her anymore."

Santa is worried that his wife might want to leave but because it is so busy, he can not find any time to spend with his wife. But Santa has an idea....

He asks you if you could write a love poem for Mrs Claus. He knows she really likes poems and thinks they are very romantic. Santa feels a little ashamed to ask you but he really insists. You hesitate but then decide to help him.
Santa wants you to write a poem of 75 words that he can send to Mrs Claus.

He has already written the first two lines, now you have to write the rest:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My dearest sweetheart,

Roses are red, violets are blue.
I am nothing without you.
........

13. Christmas bonus

It has been a tradition for years that every employee receives a Christmas bonus. This bonus usually is a package containing luxury food items and beverages, candy, a fluffy Christmas sweater etc.
This year, you are in charge of ordering the packages and also choosing what will be in them.

Because it has been a good year, Santa has decided that you can spend €75,- per Christmas package.
He asks you to make 3 different proposals and each package has to have a minimum of 8 items.
Include a photo and a list of the items with every proposal. Make sure you choose the right items that will make everyone happy.

Extra information:

There are 275 employees working at Santa’s Headquarters.
- 148 male elves.
- 117 female elves
- 9 reindeers
- you

* almost 80 % of all elves are vegetarian.
* keep in mind that most elves measure around 2 feet, six inches.
* make sure to choose healthy food instead of only candy.

14. Christmas party

When all the presents have been delivered and the busy days are finally over, it is time to relax and celebrate the coming of a new year. Every year, Santa throws a big Christmas party and invites all the elves.

He is a little behind on schedule so he has asked you to design an invitation for the party.
It is important that all the neccesary information is on the invitation but the design of the invitation should be your number 1 priority.
The design must match the theme of the party and should look very inviting and fun.

Make sure you include the following data:

- Party is on Friday 19 December 2014
- in the morning - breakfast
- ROCMN MPL 2
- bring your own food
- dresscode: (your choice)

Also include your own email address in case some Elves can not make it to the party.

( Below you can find some examples of bright and creative invitations for different occasions. )
