In this webquest we will go back to the Elizabethan Age, The English Renaissance, the time in which William Shakespeare wrote his masterworks like Macbeth, Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet and many others. Who was this Shakespeare, why did he become so famous, what did the theatres look like? You will also do some research for Romeo and Juliet. Shakespeare may be dead for four hundred years but the themes he used are universal and very much alive, they are still existing and relevant in our modern times and lives.

1. Inleiding

INTRODUCTION

The English Renaissance was a very interesting period and Shakespeare was a product of his time, his background and his opportunities. Without these, his plays would have not been written the way they were.

In this webquest we will find out a lot about the backgrounds, history and customs of these times.

Shakespeare has been very important for the English language, he invented many new words and we are still using them.

Listen to one of his most famous sonnets, sonnet number 18.

TASK

After doing this  webquest  each group has to give an oral presentation ( 10 min.) on Shakespeare's life, his works, his times, the theatres and some research for Romeo and Juliet. This presentation can include posters, pictures, use of the blackboard/ beamer, costumes, whatever you like.

In the 'bronnen' you will find some links to some video fragments. Be sure to watch these, they are funny and give  you a lot of information.

Do the Shakespeare biography quiz. (see 'bronnen')?

3. Werkwijze

PROCESS

Step 1

You will work together in groups of four.  Find three other students you´d like to work with.

Step 2

Each of you is going to do different things.

Number 1 becomes a specialist of Shakespeare's life and work. Make a short list of his most famous works.

Number 2 will go back to The Renaissance and the Elizabethan age. How was Shakespeare influenced by his time, how did it influence his work.

Number 3 is going to find out about the Theatres, actors, costumes and the customs of these days.

Number 4 will introduce us to one of Shakespeare's most famous plays, Romeo and Juliet. When did he write it, when was it first performed etc.

?

You can find all the information you need in the ´bronnen´. You can also use resources you have found yourself, that is up to you. Read all the information thoroughly, gather all the information you need and put it together on a big poster.

Time: 90 minutes.

Step 3

After you have completed this, it is time to prepare your oral presentation. Each of you has to give a (rather fluent) speech on your own topic of about 2 or 3 minutes. So it is very important to prepare it well and to practice a few times.

You are allowed to write down your speech on a piece of paper if that makes you feel more secure.

Time: 45 minutes

Step 4

Now it is time to give your presentation. Use your poster and whatever you think is useful to give a fluent presentation. Each group has got about 10 minutes.

Time: 60 minutes (depends on the number of groups)

Step 5

The teacher and students will evaluate each speech according to given criteria. You will have to listen carefully to each presentation  in order to give a fair evaluation.  Evaluation forms will be provided by your teacher.
