Sustainable Rotterdam 2024-2025

Welcome!

Dear students of Calvijn Groene Hart,

Welcome to the wikiwijs page of the sustainable Rotterdam project!
Using this site you will go through the different steps of the sustainable Rotterdam project for the subject Geography.

During this project you will zoom in on a number of sustainable projects in Rotterdam. You also learn to answer main and subquestions by doing research. This project prepares you for your 'profielwerkstuk' and the research you need to do on HBO or even University. Each group has to research different topics/projects. So make sure you choose your subjects on time, before other groups have taken them.

Voortvarende aanpak energietransitie, armoedebestrijding en duurzaam wonen | GroenLinks Rotterdam

A part of the project will be the Rotterdam Citywalk about sustainability on the 4th of November (the day after the autumn break).

For the project, go through the steps mentioned on the left in the menu. Your end product will be a report and a presentation.
Are you already curious about what you will be judged on? Then check the 'Assessment criteria' heading on the left for more information!

Please take into account that if not everyone in the group handed in work of equal quality, that the teacher might choose to give you different grades.

Good luck!

Miss Heskes

Learning objectives of the project

What?

  • Each group investigates a number of projects in Rotterdam with regard to sustainability. There are different themes you can choose from. In total you will research five different locations/projects.

  • You are going to investigate what the project is, wat is sustainable about that project and why the project is important.

  • You conduct a research and answer a main question and subquestions.

  • Groupsize is 3-5 people. (If you have another groupsize, special rules apply, discuss those with your teacher)

Benefits of Teamwork | Eternal Sunshine of the IS Mind

Why?
By doing this project/research you are already preparing for further study (HBO / University). It will also give you an idea of what is required next year when you write your 'profielwerkstuk'.

You learn a number of skills that you need for follow-up studies:

  • Presenting

  • Collaboration

  • Writing reports

  • Critical thinking

  • ICT skills

  • Reflection.

A lot of these skills fit perfectly with the profile of what is expected of a TTO-student, so I have high expectations.

How?

You follow the steps described on the left in the menu. This will help you to go through the entire research cycle. You can get help during the lessons from your geography teacher.

How do we work?

  • Before you start to do anything, make a groupchat on teams.
  • You also add your teacher here.
  • This is the place where all the communication about the project takes place when you are not in a geography lesson. This way, the teacher can see how hard you are working and how the collaboration is going and if you have a good planning. This is also part of the assessment (see assessment).Tip: you can call eachother in the groupschat if your working from home, that is a lot more effective than just chatting.
  • This is also the place where you hand in your work for feedback during the lessons. Only the final report is handed in via SOM.
  • We expect active participation from all group members. We expect equal commitment from every student when it comes to the project. If students contribute less than other students in the group this should be told to the teacher as soon as possible (so not after the hand in date of the project). The teacher could decide to give you a different grade than the rest of the group if you didn't work as hard as your groupmembers. To justify how much work you put into the project you make a personal logbook to log the hours you worked on this project.

Planning

This is a global planning. The teacher can deviate from this:

  • Lesson 1 project: Explanation project, make groups, make a group chat on teams.
  • Lesson 2 project: Choose your locations and then submit it on teams for permission from your teacher.
  • Lesson 3 project: Explanation citywalk and preparation presentation. If time left start by answering the sub-questions.
  • Lesson 4 project: Complete the subquestions. Hand this in to the teacher for feedback.

After the autumn break:

  • Lesson 5 project (after autumnbreak): Use the feedback to improve your subquestions and start by answering the main question.
  • Lesson 6 project: Assemble the entire report with all the information you have gathered before.
  • Lesson 7 project: Create the presentation for the project.

Final report submission date: 29 November 2024
Presentations are in week 48 in the lessons. Schedule follows later.

City walk

On November 4th we will go to Rotterdam for a city walk about sustainability. Below you will find all relevant information about this.

You will get one location per group, you will research that location and make a small presentation that will take up to 3 to 5 minutes, with a minimum of 200 words.

Below you can find your location with the mimimum requirements. You are allowed to add some extra information. Remember that you are on location, so you can point out things around you.

On the day of the city walk you bring a printed version of your presentation, which you hand in to your teacher afterwards.

Location 1: Leuvehoofd

From here you can see two interesting things you can tell about in your presentation:
1. The Erasmus Bridge
2. The ‘Noordereiland’
The Noordereiland is an island in the middle of the river Meuse, that means there is a high risk of flooding especially in the coming years with climate change. Find out what Rotterdam and the inhabitants of the island do to cope with that.
The Erasmus Bridge is a good example of a Dutch waterwork. The Netherlands are in the lead when it comes to dealing with water. A lot of countries ask for our help when it comes to dealing with high water levels, for instance when building dikes. Find out why we are in the leading position when it comes to water.
This is what you must tell in your presentation:
- What the ‘Noordereiland’ is and how it copes with climate change.
- Why the Netherlands have a leading position when it comes to dealing with water (example Erasmus bridge).

Location 2: Museumparkgarage

The Museumparkgarage is an example of an underground water storage. Rotterdam has many places like that to cope with climate change.
This is what you must tell in your presentation:
- What the two main functions of the ‘Museumparkgarage’ are.
- Why we need underground water storages like the ‘Museumparkgarage’.

- Two other examples of underground water storage in Rotterdam.

Location 3: Westersingel + Sculpture promenade

The Westersingel is an emergency storage for water, but besides that it has another function. Use the internet to find information about the Westersingel.
This is what you must tell in your presentation:
- What the functions of the Westersingel are.
- What happens when there is heavy rainfall.

Location 4 : Water Square Benthemplein

The Water Square Benthemplein was the first big water square in the world.
This is what you must tell in your presentation:
- What are the functions of the Benthemplein?
- How do the several basins of water work?
You can use the internet to find information.

Location 5: Green Roof Hofplein

Hofplein is a former train station and railway viaduct which is given a new sustainable function. Find out what the Hofplein station looks like now.
This is what you must tell in your presentation:
- What happened to the station and why could you call that sustainable?
- What happened to the railway viaduct?
- How does the green roof work?
Use the internet to find information.

Location 6: Central Station and Unilever

The Central Station in Rotterdam is one of the most sustainable trainstations in the Netherlands. In your presentation you will tell why.
Unilever is a big Dutch multinational. Their headquarter is in Rotterdam. Find out what the company does about sustainability.
Use the three P’s of sustainable development in your presentation: people, planet and profit.
This is what you must tell in your presentation:
- What is sustainable about Rotterdam Central station?
- What does Unilever claim to do about sustainable development?
- Also tell if you think that the companies do what they claim to do and if they do enough about sustainability.
Use the internet to find information.

Location 7: Leuvehaven

The Leuvehaven is one of the old parts of the big port of Rotterdam. The port of Rotterdam has developed really quickly in the last year.
This is what you must tell in your presentation:
- How and when was the Leuvehaven created?
- How has the port of Rotterdam developed since then?
- Also tell something about the importance of the port of Rotterdam for the Netherlands.
Use the internet to find information.

Research

To do this research you're going to follow a couple of steps. All the steps together form a research cycle, like the one described in the picture.

Click on the left to go to the first step. Follow all the steps in the logical order.

At the end you have to hand in a report and do a presentation.

Step 1 (Wonder)

During this research you will investigate five different sustainable projects in Rotterdam. Sustainable development literally means: a way of producing and consuming without environmental exhaustion and environmental pollution and minimizing environmental impact. If you don't remember what sustainability is, look it up in Chapter 4 of your coursebook.

Also watch this video to see what sustainability is about. It is a very huge subject which you can look at from a lot of different perspectives. This video is made by the Port of Rotterdam, which is one of the most sustainable harbours in the world.

You, on the other hand, are going to research the sustainability of the City of Rotterdam.

There are many sustainable projects or locations in the city of Rotterdam to investigate.
Below are six categories into which you can divide those sustainable projects/locations:

  • Buildings (think of modifications to buildings, architecture)

  • Water (water storage, adapted parking garages, water squares)

  • Energy (energy efficient, green energy)

  • Green (parks in the city, green roofs/ agriculture on roofs)

  • Mobility (moving within the city)

  • Circular (recycling).

You must choose five sustainable locations or projects, each of which fits a different category. So you cannot choose two projects about water.

Be careful not to simply choose a location or project. It is useful to choose a somewhat larger project so that you have enough information at your disposal to answer the subquestions about your project.

You can use this website, among others, to find sustainable locations: https://duurzaam010.nl/nieuws/
This is a website with news reports about sustainable initiatives in Rotterdam, where you can get inspiration.

Rotterdam Duurzaam

You are also allowed to search on the web to find suitable projects.

Once you have chosen all five of your locations/projects, send a list of the five chosen projects and locations with the matching category in the teams app and ask your teacher for approval.

After the permission of the teacher you can go to step 2.

Step 2 (Explore)

Formulating a research question is extremely difficult. That's why the teachers have already formulated your main question and the subquestions for you. Next year when you write your 'profielwerkstuk', you are going to be able to choose these questions yourselves.

The idea is that you first answer all the subquestions and that the answers of all the subquestions together will ultimately lead to the answer on the mainquestion. For the subquestions you use (internet)sources to look up the answers, for the main question you use the information from the subquestions and therefore no new information.

Research questions: What do you want to discover? – Zemi Ready

Main question:

How do your five chosen projects fit in with the sustainable vision of the municipality of Rotterdam?

Subquestions:

  1. What does sustainability mean (to you)?

  2. What is the municipality of Rotterdam's vision on sustainability?

  3. What did you see and learn during the  for your sustainable city walk?

  4. Which projects have you chosen and why are the projects sustainable?

If you have read these questions you can go to step 3 (you don't have to answer the questions yet).

Step 3 (Investigate)

You can see that that you need to answer four subquestions that lead to the answer on the main question. Copy these subquestions and start your research. Which information can you find?

Use reliable sources with correct information. For example: don't use Wikipedia as a source, that can be written by anyone, but Wikipedia can be a good place to find good sources!

Some questions you can ask yourself about the sources are:
What year does the source come from? (is it still up to date?) For a website: What does the layout look like? Who owns the website? Who is the creator of the source? Is this a reliable party? Does the source creator also refer to other sources? Is the creator's goal to inform? (Or: give an opinion, convince?) Avoid websites like: Wikipedia (but have a look at the sources that are stated on the bottom of the website), blogspot.com, wordpress.com, scholieren.com

Because you are working in a group it is a good idea to make a planning.
Divide the subquestions over the group and take into account the amount of work it will take. Some subquestions are shorter/easier to answer than others.

Rotterdam zet in op duurzame én betaalbare nieuwbouw met 'Paris Proof'-tuin | Vastgoed Business School

After you find good sources, start answering the subquestions.
This is an indication of what I expect from you in terms of length and content:

Subquestion 1: What does sustainability mean (to you)?

First explain the concept of sustainability, what does it mean? Perhaps there are several definitions? (use multiple sources) Then you answer what sustainability means to you (and your group) and what kind of sustainable things you already do. (Everyone in the group writes a part about themselves) Use 500 to 700 words.

Subquestion 2: What is the municipality of Rotterdam's vision on sustainability?

Find out what the vision/goals/ambitions of Rotterdam are when it comes to sustainability. Do a thorough search in the municipal documents and eventually formulate a clear answer. Use between 500 and 700 words (Tip: you can start with this source: https://duurzaam010.nl/wat-wij-doen/)

Subquestion 3: What did you see and learn during the  for your sustainable city walk?
On the day of the city walk you should actively participate and do your own presentation on location. You will take photos and assignments for your report during the day. In this sub-question, you will describe what you have done, seen and learned during this day. You will also tell about the presentation you gave and how it went. Use between 400 - 500 words.

Subquestion 4: Which projects have you chosen and why are the projects sustainable?

This is a very important question in the assessment. You make this subquestion per project. You first describe for project 1 what the project entails, where it is located, who made/designed it and how this project contributes to a sustainable world. Really go into depth, so don't just mention, it saves water, but also explain why it is important that we save water. Use geographical terms in this! Use at least 400 words per project. So a total of 2000 words.

I also expect pictures in the report with a short description underneath it. There should be no spelling errors in the report, I expect correct use of English.

You will have at least two lessons to answer the subquestions. This may mean that you will also have to do some homework at home.

You must submit the first version of the answers to the four subquestions to your teacher by 4 November at the latest. You will then receive feedback from the teacher, so that you can further improve your report.

If you do not submit anything, or only half a report, you will also receive no/less feedback and you will ultimately see this reflected in your final grade, so make use of this opportunity!

Step 4 (Review)

Are you done with answering the subquestions and did you use the feedback of the teacher to complete/adjust your answers?

Then you are ready to answer the main question. Use at least 400 words for this. Make sure every group member works on this. This is the most important part of your research. Use information from all the subquestions to form the answer on the main question. You should never use new information here.

In the conclusion you first give a short summary of the answers of the subquestions and then come to a conclusion (an answer to the main question).

As soon as you formed the answer to the main question, you are finished with the most important part of your research and you are ready to create your report.

Conclusie | Onderzoeknaarhetprocesvanmakeupmaken

Step 5: Report (Create)

The report consists of the following:

  • Cover Sheet (with title, image, names, class, subject, teacher, due date)

  • Table of Contents (A list of all chapters, sections, and subsections in the main text and any other headings, such as introduction, evaluation, and reference list, and the page number on which they can be found)

  • Preface (The preface is intended to capture the reader's interest and explain the purpose of the report.)

  • Short overview of main question and subquestions (a list of the questions you will answer in your report, so the answers to the questions are not yet included here!).

  • Research (answers to the subquestions)

  • Conclusion (answer to the main question)

  • Evaluation (Write in your evaluation what you learned from this project. Everyone does this for themselves.
Question 1: What did you already know about sustainability in the city? Question 2: What did you learn about sustainability during this project? Question 3: What did you learn about doing research? Question 4: How did the collaboration in the group go? and Question 5: Do you have any feedback for the teachers about this assignment?)

  • Logbook (In this research you will work together with a number of fellow students. That is why you have to keep a logbook. The idea is that you clearly show what you have worked on and for how long. This also allows the teacher to see the division of tasks. Did one do more than the other? Then this must also be clearly reflected in your report. This is how you will be assessed. It is therefore possible that there are different grades within groups at the end).

  • Sources (It is very important to name your sources, because you have used other people's work to answer your questions. To prevent plagiarism, you must also submit your report via SOM. This way, we can check whether you have written your own report or whether you have cut and pasted everything.)

the requirements of an effective report

Step 6: Presentation (Share)

During period 2, you will present your results in a presentation. The presentation is also part of your grade.

In your presentation, you will use a tool such as: PowerPoint, Prezi, Lessonup, etc. In this, you will process part of the points below in keywords, so not whole stories.

The following parts must be included in the presentation:

  • Which projects have you researched?

  • What were your results and your answer to the main question?

  • What went well, what didn't go well?

  • What have you learned from doing this project?

Your presentation must take at least 5 minutes. The maximum time is 10 minutes. You are allowed to show one video clip (not more than 2 minutes).

Please note that presentation skills are also important! It is important that you know what you are talking about and know your story by heart. So no reading from paper! I want every person to participate in this presentation. You can also expect questions from me at the end of the presentation.

The days and times of the presentations follow later.

Beoordeling en inleveren

This project counts 2x for geography. It is therefore important to know what we look at when we judge your report/presentation. Your report will determine approximately 2/3 of your final grade and the presentation will determine 1/3 of your final grade.

Your grade consists of different parts.

The following things are taken into account:

  • Collaboration within the groups

  • Preparatory lessons (active in (teams)class, submit form on time, ask questions to teacher if necessary)

  • Research (main and subquestions answered correctly, good sources are used, the feedback option from the teacher is used)

  • Excursion day November 4 (How did the presentation go, did you prepare well and listen to other groups?)

  • The report (layout, content, creativity, logbook, sources, evaluation). Also see heading 'report'.

  • The presentation of your report on school (presentation skills, content presentation). Also see heading 'presentation'.

You submit your report no later than November 29, 2024 on SOM and on paper.
