Around the world - Reading

Welkom!

Opdracht 1: School camp around the world

School Camps Around the World

School camps are fun and exciting for students. They are different in every country. Let’s look at how school camps are in Australia, Japan, Canada, South Africa, and the Netherlands.

In Australia, students often go to the outback for school camps. They sleep in tents or cabins. During the camp, they do many outdoor activities. They hike in the forests, swim in lakes, and sometimes see animals like kangaroos and koalas. The camps are focused on having fun and learning about nature.

In Japan, school camps are very organized. Students usually stay in big group houses called "ryokan." At these camps, they do activities like cooking, hiking, and cleaning together. They also play games and do crafts. The camps in Japan are focused on teamwork and learning how to live together.

In Canada, school camps are often in the mountains or by large lakes. Students do many exciting activities like canoeing, fishing, and having campfires. They also learn about the environment and how to be safe in the wild. These camps are focused on both having fun and learning important survival skills.

In South Africa, school camps are often in wildlife parks. Students stay in lodges or tents. They go on safaris to see animals like lions, elephants, and giraffes. They also learn about nature and how to protect it. The camps are very exciting and focused on learning about wildlife and conservation.

In the Netherlands, school camps are usually near the sea or in the countryside. Students stay in holiday homes or hostels. They do activities like cycling, playing games and playing sports. Sometimes, they also visit museums and learn about Dutch history and culture. The camps are focused on both having fun and learning new things.

School camps are a great way for students to learn new things and have fun. They make new friends and have many adventures. No matter where they are, school camps help students grow and learn.

Opdracht 2: Summer camps around the world

In de stukjes tekst die je straks gaat lezen, praten vier tieners over hun 'summer camp'. Lees de tekst en beantwoord daarna de vragen.

Summer camps are a popular activity for children during their summer break, many parents send their child to a summer camp. These camps are meant to be fun, learning experiences where children can learn skills like working together while having fun! There are a lot of different types of camps available, some camps focus on having fun, while other focus on learning. Let's look at four teenagers talking about their experiences at a special summer camp.

Pedro (Nature camp): We did different things every day, but I did get a bit annoyed because we had cheese sandwiches every lunchtime. It really was good fun, although we worked really hard. One day, the schedule was changed at the last minute, and instead of our planned activity, we all helped the staff finish cutting the plants by the lake. That was the toughest day – but also the best. They actually needed our help, we weren’t just being kept busy. Every day, we cooked in teams of five. When it was our team’s turn, we made a simple dinner of pasta and salad for everyone. The whole pan was empty at the end, so it must have tasted good!

Maria (Culture camp): Every morning we had the same breakfast, and then cleaned up the camp. Everyone had to help, and we could only leave when the camp was completely clean. The first time we went into the city, we held a competition and we were split into teams. We had a list of things to find, like statues and other landmarks. It wasn’t too difficult, my team found almost all of the items on our list and came in second place. I was worried I might miss my parents, but there was something going on every minute and I never got time to think about them. We went to different museums in and around the city every day, and in the evenings we cooked or went out for pizzas. It was a great chance to learn about another country and its history.

Harry (Language camp): We stayed with families who had kids our own age. It was a great way to practise the language we had been learning in the classroom. We also had to do a quiz on the last day. We were put into teams with clues to help us find places around the town. Our team finished early, so we waited for everyone else in a café in the main square. While we were there, a film crew arrived and started filming! I can’t wait to see the movie when it comes out. We were sitting outside, so we might even be in it!

Isabella (Theatre camp): We stayed in a youth centre in a city, and went into the city centre by bus every day. It was a good way to see a bit of the city. We had our classes in an old theatre. I loved the look of the old building, and we could walk around during our breaks and watch plays. The actors we saw were brilliant, and it was amazing to watch them perform. The focus was definitely on having fun, but we still learned a lot and I’m looking forward to using everything I have learnt! The food at the centre could have been better, but I didn't mind.

Je krijgt straks vijf zinnen die passen bij één van de 'summer camps' die de tieners hebben beschreven. Kies de naam van de juiste persoon die bij de zin past.
