Rules for using the comparative

Syllable: A part of a word that you say as a single sound.

For example, the word water has two syllables. Wa-ter.

- Add "-er" to one-syllable words (e.g. "big" becomes "bigger")

- Words with two syllables that end in "y": Change "-y" into ''-ier'' (e.g. "happy" becomes "happier")
- Two-syllable words not ending in "y" and three or more syllable adjectives: Before the word, use "more" (e.g. "beautiful" becomes "more beautiful")

- Some words have unusual forms (e.g. "bad" becomes "worse")

- Not all words can be made comparative. Example: "unique" and "perfect". Something can't be more/less unique or more/less perfect.

Rules for using the superlative

- If the word is one syllable (a short word), the suffix "-est" is usually added at the end. "Big" becomes "biggest," for example.

Some one-syllable words, such as "big," can be transformed into superlative form by adding "-est" at the end, but you must also double the last letter. As a result, "big" becomes "biggest."

This rule does not count for all words.

- If the word is two syllables long and ends in "y," change the "y" to I and add "-est". "Happy" becomes "happiest" for example.

- If the word has two or more syllables and does not end in "y," you put "the most" before it. "Beautiful" becomes "the most beautiful," for example.

- Some words have irregular superlative forms. For example, "bad" becomes "worst".
