Topic

Today you will be learning about the Perfect Tense!

At the end of this lesson, you:

  • can make and use the present perfect.
  • can make and use the past perfect.
  • know the difference between English and Dutch regarding the perfect tense.
  • can spell past participles correctly.

Wat do you already know?

Let's see if you already know a little bit about the perfect tense. Complete the following questions.

Instructions

Step 1: Look around the Wikiwijs to get to know how it works.

Step 2: Click on the button that says 'The perfect tense'

Step 3: Read the instructions of the perfect tense carefully and complete the check quiz.

Step 4: If you find the written instructions still a bit difficult, you can find a video when you click on 'extra', in which the perfect tense is explained as well. You can watch that if you have earphones.

Perfect Tense

The present perfect

How do we make the present perfect?

Subject + have/has + past participle (voltooid deelwoord)

Subject "have/has" Past participle
I/you/he/we/they/you have/has worked.

Remember: past participle often ends with –ed, but not when a verb is irregular.

Subject "have/has" Past participle
I/you/he/we/they/you have/has done.

We use the present perfect when
- we talk about something that happened in the past but is still relevant at this moment.
- something started at a point in the past but is still going on.

The past perfect

How do we make the past perfect?

Subject + had + past participle (voltooid deelwoord)

Subject "had" Past participle
I/you/he/we/they/you had worked.

Remember: past participle often ends with –ed, but not when a verb is irregular.

Subject "had" Past participle
I/you/he/we/they/you had done.

We use the past perfect when:
- a situation was going on in the past and stopped at a point in the past.

Different in Dutch?

In Dutch, we use different verbs when we make the perfect tense:
- ben/is/zijn/was/waren
- heb/hebt/heeft/hebben/had/hadden

In English, we only use the verb ‘have’. Don’t forget to use the right form though.

Dutch English
Ik ben gevallen.

I have fallen.

Zij was gegaan.

She had gone.

Wij zijn aangekomen. We have arrived.
Zij waren gebleven. They had stayed.

Spelling

After a consonant (medeklinker) ’y’ changes to ‘ie’

  • to copy – copied

A double consonant after one stressed (beklemtoonde) vowel (klinker)

  • to refer – referred
  • But: answered/developed (no stress on the last syllable (lettergreep))

The letter ‘L’ is always doubled, except for when there are two vowels before the L

  • to travel – travelled
  • to sail - sailed
  • Exception: to dial - dialled

Instructions

“Olivia is 20 years old and comes from The Netherlands. For the past few months, Olivia has been travelling around the world, and she has visited 10 countries so far. On her last day of every country she visits, she writes a blogpost so her family can follow her journey across the world.”

Chose a country and write a blogpost as if you are Olivia. Write about what she did while visiting that country and the situations that she got in. Don’t forget to use the perfect tense. Be as creative as you want, but keep it appropriate.
