Future tense - 1

You use the future tense to talk about the future.
You can form future tense with:

  • to be going to
  • will
  • present continuous
  • present simple

to be going to

Use
You use the 'to be going to' form to indicate what you are planning or what will happen (a prediction).

Form
A form of the verb 'to be' + 'going to' + the first form of a verb.

Examples

  • I am going to do my homework tonight.
    (I'm going to do that because I've planned it.)
  • Look at those clouds! I think it is going to rain.
    (I predict it's going to rain, the clouds are the proof)

Will and won't

Use
'Will' is used to indicate that something is about to happen.
You just don't say when it happens.
'Won't' is used to indicate that something is not going to happen.
So both are predictions.

Form
Will/won't + first form of a verb.

Examples

  • I will go to Africa someday.
    (Someday I will go to Africa.)
  • I will do my homework.
    (You say you will do your homework, but not when.)

Future tense - 2

Present continuous

Use
When something will happen in the near future.
This concerns things that have been agreed (for example a date, a concert or a birthday).

Form
A form of the verb 'to be' + a verb in -ing form.

Examples

  • Later on I'm seeing Bill.
    (Soon I have an appointment with Bill.)
  • Tonight I'm meeting my friends.
    (You have an appointment with your friends.)

Present simple

Use

When something is going to happen according to a fixed schedule such as a timetable (arrival & departure times, opening & closing times and start & end times).

Form
Whole verb + -s (at he, she & it).

Examples

  • My train arrives at platform 10.
    (According to the timetable.)

  • The shop closes at 6 O'clock.
    (Opening and closing times.)
