Future: will

Future: will

To say that you are going to do something in the future or that will happen in the future,
you can use the 'going-to-future' or 'will-future'.

You use the 'will-future' for:

  • future events beyond your control.
    • The sun will shine tomorrow
  • prediction (I think, I hope, I'm afraid).
    • I think Sue will arrive in Paris at 6 pm.
  • unplanned events.
    • Hang on! I will have a word with you.

Sometimes you can use shall instead of will for 'I' and 'We'.

  • I shall grow old some day.

Will is often contracted.
This is possible with all personal pronouns: I, you, he, she, it, we, they.

  • I will help you. - I'll help you.
  • He will help you. - He'll help you.
  • They will help you. - They'll help you.

You can also use the 'will-future' in question or negative sentences.

  • He'll play football.
  • He will not play football
  • He won't play football. (short form)
  • He'll not play football. (short form)
  • Will he play football?
