Question tags

Question tags - 1

Question tags are very similar to reply questions. The only difference is that the reply questions are used by the listener and the question tags by the speaker himself.

A question tag consists of an auxiliary verb and a personal pronoun.
It is used at the end of a sentence and means as much as "right?".

  1. With a question tag you use the same auxiliary verb as in the sentence:
    • You're Andy's brother, aren't you?
    • He can sing, can't he?
If the sentence down't contain an auxiliary verb, use a form of to do:
    • You lost, didn't you?
  2. Intonation plays an important role in tags. When the intonation goes down it is simply an addition to the sentence:
    • So she doesn't like wine, does she? (not a real question)
But when the intonation goes up it is a real question and an answer is expected:
    • She does like wine, doesn't she? (a real question)
  3. If the sentence is affirmative, the tag is usually negative, and vice versa.
    • She likes wine, doesn't she?
    • She doesn't like wine, does she?

But that is not always the case. If you are questioning the information, use a similar tag.

    • So you think you're funny, do you?
    • This is the last bus, is it?

Question tags - 2

  1. Often native speakers of English ask a question by starting with a negative sentence followed by an affirmative tag.
    • You couldn't lend me a fiver, could you?
    • You haven't seen her, have you?
  2. Use won't for requests:
    • Do sit down, won't you?
Will, would, can, can't and could are used to tell people to do something. Would and could are more friendly than will and can.
    • Give us a hand, will you?
    • Open the window, would you?
    • Move this, can you?
    • Hold the door, could you?
    • Shut up, can't you?
  3. In spoken English, the tag after I am is always aren't I and not Am I not.
    • I'm right, aren't I?
Instead of isn't, you often hear ain't it.
    • It's right, ain't it?
And if you really want to talk with a London accent: innit
    • It's right, innit?
