Step 1 - Listening

Interview

You are going to watch a scene from a comedy. Noel Sanders is applying for a job.

  • Watch the video and do assignment 1.
  • Read the questions.
  • Watch the video again and do assignment 2.

Assignment 1

This video has four important characters:

Noel Sanders  He is the third person to apply for the job.

Applicant 2     Noel sits down next to him. (In groups of three leave this one out).

The boss         The person who is holding the interviews.

Applicant 1     The person who is having his interview.

  • Each one of you chooses a character to focus on. In groups of three leave applicant 2 out.
  • Watch the video. (What does your character do and say?)
  • Act out what happens in the video.

Questions

  1. What is the secretary doing when Noel enters the office?
  2. Where does the laughter come from?
  3. What does the applicant say about getting the job?
  4. What does the applicant say about the gift?
  5. Why is Noel the next applicant to be interviewed?

You are going to read two almost identical dialogues of a job interview.

  • Read the dialogues and do assignment 1.
  • Read the dialogues again and do assignment 2.

Assignment 1

Download the worksheet and fill in the grid (on your own) and discuss the answers in your group.
Make a copy of the worksheet in your own account (File - Make a copy ...) or download the worksheet (File - Download as).

Interviewer: So, you've applied for the IT support position, right?

David: Yes, I have.

Interviewer: Can you tell me what made you reply to our advertisement?

David: Well, I was looking for a job in IT and I think that I'd be really good at this kind of work because it is more or less the same as what I have been doing with other companies before.

Interviewer: Do you know exactly what you would be doing as an IT support officer?

David: Well, I imagine I would be helping clients with IT questions, on the phone and in person, and keeping a check on the supplies in the office.

Interviewer: That about covers it, you would also be responsible for dealing with the incoming and outgoing post. What sort of worker do you regard yourself as?

David: I suppose I'm an honest and hardworking worker. I’ve never had problems with bosses, colleagues or clients before.

Interviewer: Now, do you have any questions you'd like to ask me about the position?

David: Yes. Could you tell me what hours I would have to work?

Interviewer: We open at 9.00, but you would be expected to arrive at 8.30 and we close at 6.00 pm.

You would be able to leave then. You might have to work a weekend now and then but you will be paid extra for that and you will get two days off during the week in return.

Interviewer: I think I have asked you everything I wanted to.

Thank you for coming along to the interview.

David: Thank you. When will I know if I have been successful?

Interviewer: We'll be making our decision next Monday, we'll give you a call.

John: Yes, I have.
Interviewer: Can you tell me what made you reply to our advertisement?
John: Well, I was looking for a part-time job to help me through college. And I think that I'd be really good at this kind of work.
Interviewer: Do you know exactly what you would be doing as a shop assistant?
John: Well I imagine I would be helping customers, keeping a check on the supplies in the store, and preparing the shop for business.
Interviewer: That about covers it, you would also be responsible for keeping the front of the store tidy. What sort of student do you regard yourself as . . . did you enjoy studying while you were at school?
John: I suppose I'm a reasonable student. I passed all my exams and I enjoy studying subjects that interest me.
Interviewer: Have you any previous work experience?
John: Yes. I worked part-time at a take-away in the summer holidays.
Interviewer: Now, do you have any questions you'd like to ask me about the position?
John: Yes. Could you tell me what hours I'd have to work?
Interviewer: We open at 8.00, but you would be expected to arrive at 7.30 and we close at 6.00 pm. You would be able to leave then.
I think I have asked you everything I wanted to. Thank you for coming along to the interview.

You are going to write questions about these two dialogues. There are four tasks:

Task 1             Write 5 true/false statements about dialogue 1.

Task 2             Write 5 questions about dialogue 1.

Task 3             Write 5 true/false statements about dialogue 2.

Task 4             Write 5 questions about dialogue 2.

  • Each one of you takes a task.
  • Give your statements and questions to your group members.
  • Answer the questions.
  • Check the answers.

You could also swap your statements and questions with another group.

Now you are going to pracise having a job interview.
Work together with a classmate. Both of you are employer and employee one time. Imagine you apply for a position as a shop assistant on Saturdays to earn some extra money. The owner of the shop will be your future employer and has the interview with you.

Expressions: If you need some extra help, go to your StudioWozzol account and take another look at the chunks.
Now you are going to have a conversation.

  1. Find someone to work with and use the schedule at the end of the page.
  2. Write down a couple of words to help you during the conversation.
  3. Practise your conversation at least twice.

After practising twice, do the following things:

  1. Find another pair to work with.
  2. Act out your conversation.
  3. Let them write down feedback for you.
  4. Let them do the conversation and write down feedback for them.
  5. Discuss what things were good and what you can do better next time.

  • Compare your list with that of a classmate: did you mention the same points?
  • Discuss with your classmate what is important to mention in a job interview conversation.
