Introduction

The subject of this double period is the news.

  • Form groups of three or four pupils.

A game
You are going to play a game and the person with the highest score wins.
You are going to write a word web about the subject “news”.

  • Write down the word 'news' in the middle of a sheet of paper.
  • Take 2 minutes on your own to write down as many English words related to “news”.
  • Compare your word webs and score points.

Writing headlines is difficult! You must try to give as much information as possible in just one line.
Moreover, the line must be interesting and capture (=trekken) people's attention.
This exercise shows that headline writing is not easy.

Work together with a classmate and discuss what is wrong or strange about the following headlines.
Use www.macmillandictionary.com if you need a dictionary.
