Step 1 - Reading

Telephones
You are going to read a text about telephones.

  • Read the text.
  • Answer the questions.

Telephones are a major part of our lives these days. When I was growing up,
I perhaps used the phone once a week. It was almost a big event when it rang. Everyone rushed into the living room to find out who was calling. Of course, it was an old-style phone – the size of a football. And you had to leave it on the table because it was plugged into the wall.

Today, however, is a totally different matter. Everyone has a phone.
Some people I know have several. They change them every six months when the latest models come out. Today’s phones aren’t really phones. They are like personal entertainment devices that have a phone. I’m waiting for the watch phone. I’m sure it’ll be here soon.

Step 2 - Listening

Emergency
You are going to watch two videos from the comedy The IT crowd.

  • Do assignment 1.
  • Watch the video and write the emergency number in full.
  • Read the questions (assignment 2).
  • Do assignment 3.

Assignment 1

The first video gives you information about a new emergency number.
First revise the numbers 0 to 9.

  • Can you spell them correctly?
  • What is special about the number 0?

Watch the video and write the emergency number in full text.

Compare the number that you wrote down with the number a classmate wrote down. Did you write the same number?

Assignment 2

Read the Questions.

  • What is the man behind the desk doing?
  • What does the girl say?
  • What can you read on the fire extinguisher?
  • Which part of the new emergency number does he remember?
  • What does he write in the e-mail?

Assignment 3

Watch the second video and answer the questions.

Step 3 - Vocabulary

To be able to do all the assignments correctly, you need to know some words and sentences.
For each theme there are word lists ready in Wozzol, with which you can practice:

Vocabularylist Calling for help

  • Study the vocabulary. (10 minutes)
  • Do the exercise.

Tip!
There are many ways to study vocabulary. You can read the words aloud or copy them. The most important rule is never to spend more than 10 minutes studying words. Every minute you spend longer is a waste of time.

Step 4 - Grammar

Study the 'Knowledge base'.

Comparative and superlative.
