Introduction

Welcome to the fifth theme.
This theme is about Shopping.

How are you going to practise?
You are going to practise your writing, reading, listening and speaking skills.

What are you going to do?
You are going to read, listen, speak and write about shops and shopping.
By practising a lot, your English will improve!

Have fun!

Getting started

You have just started the theme Shopping.
You will find different things to watch, to listen to, to read and of course to do.
There are videos, recordings, pictures, texts and assignments.
There are different types of assignments. Some of them you have to do on your own, others you are doing in a group.

At the end of those group assignments you are going to discuss the answers in your group. Some assignment will be checked by the computer.

First, you are going to do a test to see if you are ready to start this theme.

Listening

  • You can understand words and basic sentences that have something to do with shopping.

Reading

  • You can understand words and basic sentences in a simple story about shopping

Having a conversation

  • You can join a simple conversation when the conversational partner is willing to speak slowly, repeats the sentences, formulates the words and helps you formulate what you're trying to say.
  • You can ask and answer simple questions that have something to do with the theme shopping.

Speaking

  • You can use simple phrases and sentences about the theme shopping.

Writing

  • You can write a short and simple story that has something to do with the theme shopping.

To do

In this theme you are going to:

  • listen to people talking about shopping for different items;
  • read texts about people talking about shopping, online shopping, money in the UK and shopping on a budget;
  • write about shopping, shops and products you can buy in shops;
  • practise conversations in shops and about shopping.

But you don't have to be able to do this right away!

Project A: Class survey

Hold a class survey about shopping. Make sure you include the following questions:

  • Who doesn't like shopping?
  • Who likes shopping slowly and carefully?
  • Who likes shopping with certain people? With whom?
  • Who enjoys shopping alone?

Use the following worksheet if you like.
Make sure you include all your classmate's answers.
You can use Google forms to hold a survey if you like.
Now write a small report on how your class likes shopping.
Were there any differences between boys and girls?

Project B: Camden fashion

Camden Town is a great place to shop if you like clothes that are a bit unusual.
You'll see some very strange clothes in this video and you'll also find out what a Cyber-Goth is!

Project C: Advertising

Your uncle needs your help!
He wants to make an English brochure for his shop, but his English is not good enough.

  • Think of a type of shop for your uncle.
  • Think of three products you can buy in his shop.
  • Think of a name for the shop.
  • Draw images or look for images on the web.
  • Write down the names and think of a good price!

Before handing the task in, let another classmate correct your brochure.
