Introduction

Welcome to the sixth theme of English
This theme is about School.

How are you going to practise?
You are going to practise your writing, reading, listening and speaking skills.
You will visit websites, play games, do exercises and listen to stories.

What are you going to do?
You are going to read, listen, speak and write about school and many things related to it.
By practising a lot your English will improve!

Getting started

You have just started the theme School.
You will find different things to watch, to listen to, to read and of course to do.
There are videos, recordings, pictures, photos, texts and assignments.
There are different types of assignments. Some of them you have to do on your own, others you are doing in a group.

At the end of those group assignments you are going to discuss the answers in your group. Some assignment will be checked by the computer.

First, you are going to do a test to see if you are ready to start this theme.

Listening

  • You can understand words and basic sentences that have something to do with: School.

Reading

  • You can understand words and basic sentences in a simple story about school.

Having a conversation

  • You can join a simple conversation when the conversational partner is willing to speak slowly, repeats the sentences, formulates the words and helps you formulate what you're trying to say.
  • You can ask and answer simple questions that have something to do with the theme school.

Speaking

  • You can use simple phrases and sentences to say something about school, class schedules and your subject package.

Writing

  • You can write a short and simple story that has something to do with the theme school.
    For example: about your class schedule or your favourite subject.

To do

In this theme you are going to:

  • Listen to people talking about school routines, school subjects and school objects;
  • Read texts about someone's timetable, school subjects, school supplies, someone's experience going to secondary school and someone's experience learning a language;
  • Write about your school and your timetable and your favorite subject;
  • Talke about your school, your experiences at school and your timetable;
  • Practised school-related vocabulary;
  • Learn and practise question words and the past simple for regular verbs;
  • Learn more about the British and American school systems.

But you don't have to be able to do this right away!

Project: Virtual tour

In this theme, you are going to create a virtual tour of your school.
There is an example of a virtual tour of a school on Woodlands: projectbritain.com.
This tour is a virtual tour with pictures.
You can also make a virtual tour of your school with a video camera:


Product:
A powerpoint or Prezi-presentation of your virtual tour of about four minutes per group (with spoken and written English). For the virtual tour in pictures your presentation has pictures in it, for the virtual tour with a videocamera your presentation has video fragments in it.
The virtual tour can be about for example students’ experiences
(with interviews), IT facilities at your school, teachers at your school, general facilities at your school et cetera.

Procedure for virtual tour in pictures:

  • Divide the class into groups of (about) four students.
  • In your groups, think about what you want to show in your virtual tour and what you need to do to show this.
  • Divide the tasks in your group. Set deadlines and schedule meetings (if necessary).
  • Prepare your presentation.
  • Present your product.

Procedure for virtual tour with a video camera:
