Project A: Dutch media

Discuss Dutch media in English by means of the following words.
Work together with a classmate. Talk for one minute about a Dutch example for each of these words.

  • Tabloid - broadsheet paper/quality paper
  • National newspaper - local newspaper
  • Gossip - BBC
  • Radio station - TV channel
  • (Not) commercial - Advertising
  • Television licence - TV/radio programme

Now, write two paragraphs (one about press, one about tv/radio) about Dutch media.
After writing, work together with a classmate and correct each other's paragraphs.
Ask your teacher how to hand your piece of writing in.

Project B: Journalist

You are going to be journalists in this task!
Each of you takes a famous person in mind.
Do not tell your classmates what person you have in mind.

You are going to play a game with three other classmates.
The goal of the game is to find out which famous person your other group members have in mind.

Preparation
Print the worksheet interview one time,
(that means one sheet per group of four pupils) preferrably on cardboard.
Cut the ten cards and put them face down on the table.

Project C: Mass media report

In this task, you're going to speak and write about mass media.
You will work together with a classmate and there is a worksheet to help you.

Procedure:

  • Find a classmate to work with;
  • Download the worksheet: Mass Media Report.
  • Work alone. Take five minutes to prepare your questions;
  • Work together. Interview each other (and write the answers down in key words);
  • Work alone. Write down how your classmate thinks about mass media in about 300 words.

Ask your teacher how to hand in the writing assignment.

Project D: Current events

In this task, you are going to prepare a 'crazy news bulletin' with a classmate.
This means you prepare a news bulletin with two crazy news items in it.
You record your news bulletin or show it in class.

Procedure:

  • Choose a classmate to work together with;
  • Look for two particular news stories on the Internet
    (for examples look at British or American newspaper websites);
  • Put together a 'crazy news bulletin' in which the two items are presented as news. The news bulletin cannot be longer than one minute and you and your classmate present one item each.
  • Ask your teacher whether your should record your news bulletin at home or show it in front of class.
