Extra material

You are here because you passed the practice test. Well done!

On this page, you will find more material on questions and negations with "to be" and "to have got".

So far, we have discussed positive questions and negations. We will now get into negative questions, combining the two!

If you want to turn a question with "to be" into a negative question you can change it like this:

A. Am I very tall?

B. Am I not very tall?

The place of the negation, not, is still the same.

Turning a question with "to have got" into a negative question:

A. Has she got a new skateboard?
B. Has she not got a new skateboard?

As you can see, as with the negation the place of the word not is still the same - right behind our subject "she".

You can also make sentences with "to be" and "to have got" shorter:

"To be": + not after the verb to make a negation.

I am I 'm
You are You 're
He/she is He/she 's
It is It 's
We are We 're
You are You 're
They are They 're

"To have got": be careful! If you make the negation short not becomes a part of have/has!

positive sentence     short sentence
I have got   I ve got
You have got   You ve got
He/she has got   He/she s got
It has got   It s got
We have got   We ve got

It has not got►   It hasn't got

You have not got►   You haven't got
They have not got►   They haven't got

If you feel confident enough, you can continue to the final test now!

Final test

Grammar 1.3 getallen (cardinal numbers)

Grammar 1.3 Cardinal Numbers (or making pizza ;)!)

I love cooking, as you know.

But to make a pizza you need ingredients, and a lot! But, how many? You need numbers to have a recipe. Today, I'll share this recipe with you and with some luck it will turn out like this:

Let's continue to the explanation or watch this video!

Explanation

To know the cardinal numbers, you need to study (leren) a few of them. Good news is, if you know the first twenty and the tens, you don't need to study much more. Except for some rules.

1
one
2
two
3
three
4
four
5
five
6
six
7
seven
8
eight
9
nine
10
ten
11
eleven
12
twelve
13
thirteen
14
fourteen
15
fifteen
16
sixteen
17
seventeen
18
eighteen
19
nineteen
20
twenty
Study these by heart! Which means, like your vocabulary on p. 84, you need to memorize these.

The rules that follow are these:

1. The numbers between 21-99 get a "-" in between the ten and the number, like this:
  • 38 = thirty-eight
  • 76 = seventy-six

2. From 100 - 120, you start with "one hundred and ...(number)". For example:
  • 116 = one hundred and sixteen
  • 107 = one hundred and seven

3. This last rule is actually a combination of rules 1 and 2. From 121 on, you get a "-" between the ten and the number. That looks like this:
  • 146 = one hundred and forty-six
  • 699 = six hundred and ninety-nine

Vocabulary

Vocabulary
