Here we will begin our introduction to English at Albeda College. At your previous school you probably learned all about the basics of the English Language. To start off the year we are going to recap some of the basics grammar topics.

Starting off with:

  • The tenses
  • Irregular verbs

The goals for this lessonseries are:

  • You understand the Present Simple and are able to apply it.
  • You understand the Present Continuous and are able to apply it.
  • You know at least 10 different irregular verbs.

Present Simple

Explanation

When do we use the present simple?

Talking about permanent situations and facts.

For example:

  • Water boils at 100 degrees Celsius.
  • I live in Rotterdam.

Talking about things that happen repeatedly.

​For example:

  • They play soccer everyday.
  • I work on the weekends.

Asking for and giving instructions.

​For example:

  • How do I get to Rotterdam centraal?
  • You turn right and take a left.

Telling stories.

​For example:

  • In the movie Twilight a girl falls in love with a vampire

Taking about future scheduled events.

​For example:

  • The meeting on Teams starts at 10:00.
  • The train leaves at 07:00.

 

How do we form the present simple?

We use the most basic form of the verb (simple).

​For example:

  • I walk
  • we talk
  • They run

But please remember the SHIT-rule

He, she and it need an +s

​For example:

  • He walks
  • She talks
  • It rains

There are also irregular verbs. But we will look at those in another chapter.

Explanation

In the English language there are a lot of verbs. Regular and irregular verbs. The basic grammar rules apply to regular verbs. But they don't apply to irregular verbs and that is why we have to learn all of the irregular verbs. And that is a lot of work. So let's make it fun!
