English 4KBL/TL - Period 3 - Oral Exam

Introduction

These mini lessons were designed to prepare you guys for your final oral in period 3. The oral consists of three different parts of the spoken language. You will have to read something aloud, react adequately to a couple of situations, give your opinion, describe events, describe objects and have a conversation about something traditional. Make sure you do all of the exercises, as they give you a very good idea on how to get through your final oral.

Reading aloud

Introduction

For this part of your oral, you have to read a text aloud. It is very important to practise this! Do all of the exercises to prepare yourself for this part. Good luck :)

In this part your pronunciation will be tested, you are going to read the short text below. First read the text silently to yourself (you have a minute and a half to do so).

Then read the text out loud; you have a minute and a half to do so.

The exercise on your oral

Tijdens de opdracht van jullie mondeling, gaat het er als volgt aan toe:

Je krijgt 1,5 minuut om de tekst, in gedachten, door te lezen. Bedenk je tijdens deze 1,5 minuut dus goed wat je gaat voorlezen, hoe je de woorden uitspreekt en op welke plekken je intonatie moet gebruiken.

Tijdens de beoordeling gelden er maar twee scores voor de uitspraak: wel (1 punt) / niet (0 punten). Jouw uitspraak wordt op de volgende onderdelen beoordeeld:

- Uitspraak; wij beoordelen jullie op de uitspraak van een selectie van woorden. Jullie weten niet welke woorden dit zijn.

- Bonuspunten; je kunt 3 extra punten verdienen als de tekst in zijn geheel Engels klinkt (uitspraak, intonatie, pauzes bij leestekens etc.)

The story of Coca-Cola

Probably the best-known drink in the world.

What is the most recognizable object in the world? Could it be a football? Or a Big-Mac? No, the answer is a Coca-Cola bottle. The famous Coca-Cola bottle is over 100 years old !

   Footballs and big macs are certainly part of life for lots of people; but Coca-Cola is now a permanent part of world culture. People know and drink Coca-Cola all over the world.
   It is said that the Coca-Cola bottle is the most recognised object in the world. Hundreds of millions of people can recognise a Coke bottle by its shape, even if they cannot see it! And the famous Coca-Cola logo is the most famous logo in the world. Unlike any other famous commercial logo, it has not changed in 100 years!
   But the story of Coca-Cola is even older than that. It was in 1886 that John Pemberton, a druggist in Atlanta, Georgia, invented a new type of syrup, using coca leaves, sugar and cola nuts, plus a few other secret ingredients! Pemberton sold it as a medicine; and with its coca (the source of cocaine), it must have made people feel good!
   Nevertheless, Pemberton's medicine was not very successful, so he sold his secret formula to another druggist, Asa Candler. Candler was interested, because he had another idea; he thought that Pemberton's "medicine" would be much better if it was mixed with soda.
   Candler was thus the man who really invented the drink Coca-Cola. At first he sold it in his drugstore; then he began selling the syrup to other drugstores, who used it with their soda fountains. Candler also advertised his new drink, and soon people were going to drugstores just to get a drink of Coca-cola.
   Before long, other people became interested in the product, including a couple of businessmen who wanted to sell it in bottles. Candler sold them a licence to bottle the drink, and very quickly the men became millionnaires. The famous bottle, with its very distinctive shape, was designed in 1916.
   During the First World War, American soldiers in Europe began asking for Coca-Cola, so the Coca-cola company began to export to Europe. It was so popular with soldiers, that they then had to start bottling the drink in Europe.
   Today, Coca-Cola is made in countries all over the world, including Russia and China; it is the world's most popular drink.
   As for the famous formula, it is probably the world's most valuable secret! The exact ingredients for making Coca-Cola are only known to a handful of people. And as for the "coca" that was in the original drink, that was eliminated in 1903. It was a drug, and too dangerous. Today's Coca-Cola contains caffeine, but not cocaine!

Je krijgt steeds 30 seconden per situatie om je, in gedachten, voor te bereiden. Bedenk je tijdens deze 30 seconden dus goed wat je moet beschrijven en welke woorden je hiervoor nodig hebt. Bedenk je goed wat de woorden in het Engels betekenen die je zou willen gebruiken.

Als eerste moet je de vorm en het materiaal van het object benoemen

Ten tweede moet je vertellen waar het object voor het gebruikt worden

Tijdens de beoordeling gelden er maar twee scores voor iedere situatie: wel (1 punt) / niet (0 punten). Jouw reactie wordt per situatie op de volgende onderdelen beoordeeld:

- Begrijpelijk; snapt een Engelsman wat je bedoeld?

- Volledig; heb je alles erin benoemd?

- Uitvoerig; als jij een hele korte reactie geeft, dan is het dus niet uitvoerig. Liever een iets langere reactie, dan een iets te korte

- Correct; is het een nette/beleefde reactie?

- Gepast; past jouw reactie bij de situatie?

Bedenk je goed wat de woorden in het Engels betekenen die je zou willen gebruiken.

Als eerste moet je kunnen samenvatten wat je in de video hebt gezien.
