Introduction

Welcome to the first theme of English
This theme is about Personal.

How?
You are going to practise your listening, reading, speaking and writing skills.
You will visit websites, play games, do exercises and listen to stories.

What?
You are going to talk about yourself and your hobbies in English.
You are also going to listen to people who talk about themselves.

Getting started

You have just started the theme Personal.

You will find different things to watch, to listen to, to read and of course to do.
There are videos, recordings, pictures, photos, texts and assignments.
There are different types of assignments. Some of them you have to do on your own, others you are doing in a group.

At the end of those group assignments you are going to discuss the answers in your group. Some assignment will be checked by the computer.

First, you are going to do a test to see if you are ready to start this theme.

Luisteren

  • Ik kan vertrouwde woorden en basiszinnen begrijpen die mezelf, mijn familie en directe concrete omgeving betreffen, wanneer de mensen langzaam en duidelijk spreken.

Lezen

  • Ik kan vertrouwde namen, woorden en zeer eenvoudige zinnen begrijpen, bijvoorbeeld in mededelingen, op posters en in catalogi.

Gesprekken voeren

  • Ik kan deelnemen aan een eenvoudig gesprek, wanneer de gesprekspartner bereid is om zaken in een langzamer spreektempo te herhalen of opnieuw te formuleren en mij helpt bij het formuleren van wat ik probeer te zeggen. Ik kan eenvoudige vragen stellen en beantwoorden die een directe behoefte of zeer vertrouwde onderwerpen betreffen.

Spreken

  • Ik kan eenvoudige uitdrukkingen en zinnen gebruiken om mijn eigen woonomgeving en de mensen die ik ken, te beschrijven.

Schrijven

  • Ik kan een korte, eenvoudige ansichtkaart schrijven, bijvoorbeeld voor het zenden van vakantiegroeten.
    Ik kan op formulieren persoonlijke details invullen, bijvoorbeeld mijn naam, nationaliteit en adres noteren op een hotelinschrijvingsformulier.

  • Have a conversation about yourself.

Project A: Asking questions

Asking questions

Final product
A video or voice recording of the conversation.

Situation
On a campsite you meet a girl or a boy ( girls and boys) your age,
she/ he is (they are) staying in the tent opposite your tent.

Task
You and your new friend(s) are sitting in front of your tent. You can see people inside her tent, ask her who they are. Are they family? Is her whole family at the campsite? Are there family members still at home? Also answers questions about yourself and your family.

Groupwork

  • Decide how many people are going to take part in this conversation.
  • Write the script. Think of five questions and answers.
  • Decide who is going to play which role.
  • Decide who is going to be the director (regisseur).
  • Rehearse the conversation.
  • Record the conversation.

You've done well if:

  • you thought of greeting each other.
  • you knew the right words.
  • you knew how to ask questions on the family of your friend.
  • you did not look at your papers very often.
  • you spoke clearly.
  • everybody could understand you.
  • you corrected your conversations after the help of another pupil.

Project B: Present yourself

Final product
Presentation about yourself and your school.

Situation
You are going to visit a school in England. At that school you have to tell the students there something about yourself.

Task
Prepare a presentation. In this presentation you should at least say the following things:

  • What your school is like (big, many students, fun teacher, good building etc.).
  • How you live (big house, parents, pets, brother/sisters).
  • Your hobbies.

You've done well if:

  • You told something about your school.
  • You told something about your home and your parents.
  • You used the correct words.
  • You spoke clearly (pronunciation).
  • You corrected your presentation after looking at it with a classmate.

Project C: Filling in a form

Final product
The filled in campsite form.

Situation
You have arrived at the campsite; you now have to fill in a
Tourist information form.

Task
Fill in the form. You and your parents are staying for one week; you also brought your dog to the campsite.

You've done well if:

  • You filled in all the boxes.
  • You used the correct words.
  • You put your name, the date and other information in the right place.
  • You changed mistakes after looking at it with your classmate.

Project D: Describing yourself

Final product
An online-chat conversation.

Situation
You are in a chat room and someone is asking you to describe yourself.

Task
Write about your looks. Use as many details as you can think of to describe yourself.


You've done well if:

  • You gave a clear description of yourself.
  • You used the correct words.
  • You wrote down the most important things.
  • You corrected your mistakes after looking at it with a classmate.
