The past

The past

The past

Dear students,

On this website, you will be revising (herhalen) the use of the Past Simple and Past Continuous.

You will find an explanation about how and when to use the tenses (tijden waarin je het werkwoord gebruikt) and there are exercises with which you can practice.

The goal of this website is that after using this site you will be able to recognize the Past Simple and Past Continuous. You will also be able to use the tenses in a sentence.

We will start with the Past Simple. To go to this page you will have to click on the arrow on the bottom right of this page.

Another way to navigate is to use the column on the left.

Past Simple

Past Simple

You have found the page!

On the next few pages we will be talking about the Past Simple.

We will discuss:

- When would you use this tense?

- How do you use it?

After this we will do a few exercises to see if you understand what has been told.

If there are any questions, don't be afraid to ask them!

As this is revision, you are allowed to skip the practice parts you think you don't need. You DO need to make the Past Simple test.

When to use the Past Simple.

The Past Simple is the easiest way of showing something happened earlier.

You use it when:

- something has begun and ended in the past. We are sure the action is finished.

- something was a habit or routine. (Like in the Present Simple!)

How to use the Past Simple.

The use of the Past Simple is quite easy.

You take the verb and add +ed.

To walk → walked.

But there are some exceptions.

When a word ends with a Y, the Y turns into an i.

To try → Tried

And irregular verbs, which we will discuss later.

Can you recognize Past Simple?

Irregular Verbs

When you use the Past Simple you will come across some words that don't follow the basic rules of the Past Simple. These are the irregular verbs and include words like:

- Is/Are → Was/Were

- Sing → Sang

- Think → Thought

Here is a fun video that might help you remember them!

After this, we will do a few exercises to see if you understand what has been told.

When to use the Past Coninuous.

When to use the past continuous:

The Past Continuous shows:

- an ongoing action in the past.

- someone was doing something when they got interrupted.

We usually use the past continuous for the last reason.

(I was laughing when my teacher told me to be quiet.)

How to use the Past Continuous

How to use the past continuous?

End test.

Hi guys, this is the last part!

However, I need you to hand in a feedback form after you're done. Please don't forget this, as I need this for my school! You can do this at the "Beoordeling" part. Thank you in advance!

Done early?

So, you're done early huh. Well good for you! Because now you can do another exercise!

You are going to write a story about something that happened at your internship.

It can be about something funny, sad, infuriating (it makes you angry), something that you are proud of or just something that makes you happy.

You need to write it in the past tense because you will write about something that happened in the past.

Your story needs to be about 150 - 250 words.

After you're done, find a classmate to mark it for you. Then, after that, you will place the story on padlet. https://padlet.com/0967626/g6w2hp4qsw74. I need to approve of it before others will read your story. I will send you feedback, so leave your name.

Please don't forget to fill in the feedback form at the end!

Beoordeling.

Hoi! Deze les heb ik gemaakt voor mijn opleiding. Ik heb dus feedback nodig!

Ik heb daar een hele mooie Form voor gemaakt, je hoeft deze alleen eventjes in te vullen!
