Welcome to the eleventh theme of English
This theme is about Press and media.

How?
By listening, reading, speaking and writing.

What?
You are going to visit websites. You are going to play games and practice.
You are going to read, listen, speak and write about different forms of media.
By practising a lot your English will improve!

Getting started

You have just started the theme Press and media.
In this theme you will find different things to watch, to listen to, to read and of course to do.
There are videos, recordings, pictures, photos, texts and assignments.
There are different types of assignments. Some of them you have to do on your own, others you will be doing in a group.

At the end of those group assignments you are going to discuss the answers in your group. Some assignment will be checked by the computer.

Project A: Interview

An interview about social media
Gesprekken voeren, informatie uitwisselen.

Situation
You are going to interview a classmate about their social media use.

  • Work together with a classmate.
  • Together, come up with eight questions you can ask to find out about someone’s social media use.
  • Decide who is going to be the interviewer and who is going to be interviewed.
  • Practise the interview at least once.

Tip: Watch the video from Blok 2 Listening again for inspiration.
Tip: Ask two classmates to listen to your interview and give feedback.

You have done a good job if:

  • You started and ended the interview correctly.
  • You knew the correct words.
  • You asked good questions.
  • You knew how to answer the questions.
  • You spoke clearly.
  • Everyone understood you.
  • You improved your interview together with other classmates.

Project B: A newspaper article

Writing a newspaper article
Creatief schrijven; een korte tekst schrijven

Situation
Something special was found on your school’s grounds (you can think of something yourself).
You were asked to write a short article for the school’s newspaper about the find.
In at least ten sentences, describe what happened and what the consequences are.
Think of a fun, catchy headline for the article as well.

Tip: Have a classmate read your article and ask for feedback.

You have done a good job if you:

  • Wrote ten sentences in English.
  • Came up with a fun, catchy headline.
  • Made clear in the article what happened.
  • Described in your article what the consequences of the find are.
  • Asked your classmates to give you feedback.

Project C: Current events

Crazy news presentation
Een publiek toespreken; een korte presentatie geven

Situation
Together with a classmate, you are going to prepare a crazy news presentation. Which means that you are going to make a news broadcast containing four news items that are a bit crazy.
You are going to make a video of your news broadcast or present it in class.

  • Choose a classmate to work with.
  • Together, look for four strange news stories. For example, check out the website of British newspapers.
  • Create a crazy news broadcast in which you present the four strange news items.
  • The broadcast has to be 4-5 minutes long and your both present two items.

You have done a good job if:

  • You started the news broadcast correctly.
  • You presented four crazy news items.
  • Your broadcast was 4-5 minutes long.
  • You spoke clearly.
  • Everybody understood you.

Project D: Social media message

Schrijven; berichten schrijven

Situation
Nowadays, newspapers and news companies also spend a lot of time on their posts on social media.
This doesn’t only mean that people from all over the world have access to world news but also that readers and watcher can easily respond to and give their opinion about news.
Together with a classmate, you are going to write a reaction to a social media news post.

  • Choose one of the news items below and write a reaction to the post of at least 50 words by yourself.
  • Work together with a classmate.
  • Read each other’s reaction and give each other feedback.
  • Discuss the following questions in English:
    • In what way are your reactions different from each other?
    • In what way are your reactions similar?
    • Why do you think this is the case?

You have done a good job if:

  • You wrote a reaction of at least 50 words.
  • It becomes clear from your reaction which post you responded to.
  • You asked a classmate to give you feedback.
