  • Read the text and do exercise 2.

Info box

A pick-up line is something a person says (usually a sentence) to make someone romantically interested in him or her, for example, “Hello beautiful”.

Break-up excuses are some common reasons for ending a relationship with someone.

Dating

Dating has come a long way. Prior to the late nineties, if you had a crush on a girl and school was out, you had to search through town in hope of finding her. If you had her number, you could gather your guts and phone her on her family’s telephone line, but you’d have to get through her parents just to talk to her.

Nowadays, teens exchange emoticon-filled messages on social media. Online, users post flattering photos (which probably conceal their major flaws) on their profile and flirt with other users on the site. It almost seems like some teenagers prefer communicating their emotions behind the protection of an electronic screen to talking face to face.

A lot of (young) adults currently use dating apps to find a romantic partner. Most of these apps work in a similar way: You are shown some carefully chosen pictures of app-users that match with your preferences and you can either swipe right (match) or left (no match). Often, there is also some additional information about the person on their profile: where they work, what they enjoy doing in their free time, what they are looking for in a relationship, etc. Even though they are alike, most dating apps have a feature that makes them unique. For example, Happn matches you with people you’ve crossed paths with in real life. On Bumble women make the first move and Breeze matches you with one person a day and arranges a first date for you. Nowadays, there is a dating app out there for everyone.

Step 3 - Vocabulary

  • Study the vocabulary. (10 minutes)
  • Do the exercise.

Step 4 - Grammar

Life, live of lives

Do you know when you use the words ‘live’, ‘lives’ and ‘life’?

Study the explanation of live, lives and life.
Read the examples below. Think about the meaning of the bold words in these sentences

- Peter lives in Poland.
- Life is short.
- Many people lost their lives in the war.
- It was a live concert.

Live, lives en life

Now, do the following exercises.

Step 5 - Speaking

Have a debate about dating
You have read a text about dating. Now you are going to debate about the subject.

Preparation

  • Make groups of four.
  • Read the statement.
  • Read the descriptions of the four roles and decide who is going to do what.
  • Prepare your roles.
  • If needed, write down some words to help you during the conversation.

Having the debate

  1. Role A introduces the subject.
  2. Role B gives their arguments in favour of the statement.
  3. Role C reacts to B’s arguments and gives their arguments against the statement.
  4. Role B reacts to C’s arguments.
  5. Role A thanks Role B and C and says who the winner of the debate is and why.

Statement

You should be at least 18 years old before you start dating.

Role A
You are going to lead and judge the debate. You will introduce the topic and the statement at the beginning of the debate. Make sure your introduction is 1-2 minutes long.
At the end of the debate you are going to decide who won the debate. Give at least one argument as to why that person won.

Role B
You are going to argue in favour of the statement. Prepare at least two arguments about why you should be 18 years old before you start dating.

Role C
You are going to argue against the statement. Prepare at least two arguments about why you can start dating before you are 18 years old.

Step 6 - Writing

Write an article about breaking up
You’ve been asked to write an article in your school paper. Recently, you gave some of your friends advice on how to break up with their boyfriends and girlfriends so you decide to write an article about this subject.

  • Introduce the subject.
  • Write about 5 ways to break up with your boyfriend or girlfriend.
(You are allowed to use the Internet to get some inspiration).
  • In your conclusion write down what you think is the best way.

Ask your teacher how many words you have to use.

Step 7 - Evaluation

What have you learnt in this double period?

  • What was the easiest part of this lesson?
