Step 1 - Listening

Summer house
You are going to watch a video about a special house in Norway.

  • Work together with three or four classmates and do exercise 1.
  • Read exercise 2 before you watch the video.
  • Watch the video and do exercise 2 by yourself.
  • Do exercise 3.

Exercise 1

Discuss the following questions in your group in English before watching the video:

  • What types of houses are there? Make a list and look up the English names for the types of houses.
  • In what type of house would you like to live? Why?

Exercise 3

Discuss these questions in your group in English.

Every house has pros and cons.

  • What are the pros of living in the house from the video?
  • What are the cons of living in the house from the video?
  • Would you like to live in the house from the video? Why (not)?

Step 2 - Reading

Types of houses in England
You are going to read a text in which different types of houses are described.

  • Work together with a classmate. Read the list of headings and do exercise 1.
  • Read the text and do exercise 2 alone.

Headings:

B. Bungalow

C. Semi-detached house

D. Terraced house

E. Flat

F. Cottage

G. Mansion

H. End of terrace house


Exercise 1

The headings are all types of houses. Look up the Dutch translation of these types of houses and search for photos to see what they look like.

Step 4 - Grammar

You use the past continuous to say that:

  • someone was doing something in the past.
  • something was happening in the past.

Study the explanation of the past continuous. Think about these questions:

  • When do you use was?
  • When do you use were?

Step 5 - Speaking

Debate: renting vs. owning
You are going to have a debate with your classmates about renting or owning a house. Use the description below.

Preparation

  1. Make groups of four.
  2. Read the descriptions of the four roles and decide who is going to do what.
  3. Prepare your roles.
  4. If needed, write down some words to help you during the conversation.

Having the debate

  1. Role A introduces the subject.
  2. Role B gives their arguments in favour of the subject.
  3. Role C reacts to B’s arguments and gives their arguments against the subject.
  4. Role B reacts to C’s arguments.
  5. Role A thanks Role B and C and says who the winner of the debate is and why.

Role A
You are going to lead and judge the debate. You will introduce the topic at the beginning of the debate. Make sure your introduction is 1-2 minutes long.
At the end of the debate you are going to decide who won the debate. Give at least one argument as to why that person won.

Role B
You are going to argue in favour of renting a house. Prepare at least two arguments about why renting is a better option. Also prepare one argument against owning a house.

Role C
You are going to argue in favour of owning a house. Prepare at least two arguments about why owning a house is the better option. Also prepare one argument against renting a house.

 

Step 6 - Writing

An essay about types of houses
You are going to write an essay about in what type of house you’d like to live.

  • Introduce the type of house you are going to write about.
  • Explain why you chose this type of house.
  • Describe the at least two advantages of the house.
  • Describe the at least one disadvantages of the house and refute (= weerleggen) it.
  • Finish your essay with a conclusion in which you summarize why your chosen type of house is the best type of house.
  • Ask your teacher how many words you have to use.
