Step 1 - Listening

Working while on vacation

You are going to listen to a radio segment about why combining work and vacation is becoming more popular.

  • Do exercise 1.
  • Read exercise 2.
  • Listen to the radio segment and do exercise 2.
  • Listen to the radio segment again, if needed, and do exercise 3.

  • For each item, mark the one that you would prefer.
  • Discuss your answer with a classmate. Do you agree with each other? Why (not)?

Backpacking

Backpacking is a very adventurous way of travelling. It is important that you take all the thing you will need.

On the website Backpacking-packing-list-items you can find a list of seventeen essentials to bring with you when you go backpacking.

  • Visit the website and read the introduction above the list.
  • Do exercise 1.
  • Read exercise 2 and the list on the website
  • Do exercise 2.

Step 3 - Vocabulary

  • Study the vocabulary. (10 minutes)
  • Do the exercise.

Step 4 - Grammar

In the sentence 'I hurt myself.', the word 'myself' is a reflexive pronoun. Check the explanation about the reflexive pronoun.

Step 5 - Speaking

A discussion about workations.

You already listened to an audio clip about working away from home. Now you’re going to have a discussion about this topic.

Preparation

  • Form a group of 2 or 3.
  • Read the statement.
  • Take five minutes to think about your opinion on these topics. Come up with at least two arguments to support your opinion.
  • If needed, write down some words to help you during the conversation.
  • Discuss the statements with your classmates. Discuss the statement for at least three minutes. If you don’t agree, try to persuade each other but keep it polite.

Statement: Mixing work and vacation is a bad idea.

Step 6 - Writing

Sending an email

You are backpacking in England and you are currently staying in Brighton. You have promised an American friend of yours to send them an email about your trip.

Preparation

Writing the postcard

  • Begin your email by greeting your friend.
  • Tell your friend where you are.
  • Describe how you travelled there.
  • Explain why you decided to go backpacking.
  • Describe where you are staying.
  • Describe what you are going to do while you’re in Brighton.
  • Come up with something else to tell your friend about your backpacking adventure.
  • Finish your email.

Ask your teacher how many words you have to use.
