General information on your files
Assignment: reading & literature files
A language is most easily and efficiently learnt when you are submerged by it: when you hear and read a lot of English, the language will become easier and easier for you to understand and to use. This is why we ask you to read and listen to English texts at home, and to report on your experiences. Aside from this, we ask you to apply the literary theory that you've learnt in Dutch class to the English books you've read.
To help you fulfill this requirement, your teacher will ask you to make your own Wikiwijs Arrangement and to keep your teacher updated on your progress. Your teacher will set deadlines during your 4th year for you to copy your reports to Wikiwijs. This way, you won't lose your reports and your teacher can give you feedback on your work.
Literature file
To be able to participate in the SET Speaking, you are required to have read at least 4 English novels. You will have to hand in your literature file, consisting of 4 reports, two weeks before the SET is scheduled (in Havo 5). This means that it is imperative that you keep your reports safe, and that you won't lose them. When you pick a book, discuss with your teacher whether it is an appropriate book: it has to be of a certain level. The books have to be at least 120 pages long.
After having read a book, write a book report according to the format below and copy it to Wikiwijs. A literature report should be at least 2 pages long and can be written in both English and Dutch.

Literature ‘Private’
A)
Title: Private
Author: Kate Brian
Edition: part 1
Pages: 227
Theme: love, secrets, friendship, high-school, teen problems.
Perspective: Reed Brennan, (the I-narrator).
Place: England, Easton. ( Easton academy)
Time: 2007
B)
‘Private part 1’ written by Kate Brian is about a girl Reed Brennan. She won a scholarship to Easton Academy. It’s a great opportunity for her because now she’s able to go far away from her mother: a drug addict. All the students on Easton Academy are really rich. She feels like an out stander. She wants to become like the Billings girls: the prettiest, smartest, most confident girls on the campus! But joining the Billings girls is not that easy. She also meets Thomas Pearson: a really handsome popular guy. She feels attracted to him, and gets a ‘thing’ with him. But soon enough Reed finds out Thomas is a drugs dealer and has alcoholic problems.
Some extra information about the main characters:
Reed Brennan is a girl whit brown hair and blue eyes, and Is really athletic.
Thomas Pearson is the ‘bad boy’ of the school, but he’s struggling with some problems. He’s dealing drugs and has alcoholism issues.
Noelle lang is one of the Billings Girls. She has brown hair and brown eyes. She’s described as ‘gorgeous’ in the story. She’s also a drama queen.
Ariana Osgood is also a Billings Girl. She has light blonde hair with blue eyes. She really likes to read!
Kiran Hayes is also part of the Billings Girls. She has light brown hair and brown eyes. She is the most popular of all the Billings Girls. Everyone wants to be her!
Last but not least, Taylor Bell, She also has dark hair with blue eyes. She is really smart and likes to study.
C)
The book was in my opinion okay. But it’s not the best book I’ve ever read. I liked the characters, but the story was a little bit cliché. (For example: A girl is new in school, she falls in love with a bad boy, she wants to be popular etcetera). But despite that, I really liked the last few chapters of the book. I couldn’t stop reading those scenes! In one scene I remember that Thomas was drunk and kissed Reed without her permission. He went a little further, but Reed still didn’t want to. Reed became mad and they got into a huge fight. The Billings Girls helped her. The next day he explained he has a problem with alcohol, and Reed forgave him. But Thomas lied again, so the story was getting more intense. It’s an open-ended story so there is a part 2. But I don’t think I would read it because in my opinion the only time the book was getting intense was at the last few chapters. That took to long for me! Overall an okay book, but I would not read part 2.

Literature ‘the boy in the striped pyjamas’
A)
Title: The boy in the striped pyjamas
Author: John Boyne
Edition: 1/1
Pages: 216
Theme: world war II, jews, friendship, child
Perspective: Bruno, (the I-narrator)
Place: Auschwitz (Poland)
Time: 1940 - 1945
B)
The book is about a little boy Bruno. His father is a Nazi commandant but Bruno never really understood what that means. They moved to Poland because his father got a promotion. Their new house is next to Auschwitz. Bruno is really bored since he moved to Poland, so he decides to take a look around the house. He ends up at the fence of Auschwitz, where he meets Shmuel. Shmuel is a Jew who’s being held in Auschwitz. They become friends. But their friendship is really dangerous..
Some extra information about the main characters:
Bruno is a nine year old boy that really likes to go on adventures. He’s really nice to everyone and his father is his role-model.
Father is Bruno’s dad. Bruno always calls him ‘father’ because he has to. He’s always busy with his job. He works for the Fuhrer.
Gretel is Bruno’s older sister. She usually does her own things, she never hangs out with Bruno.
Mother is Bruno’s mom. She’s really supportive about her husband, but eventually she thinks it’s wrong what he is doing for his job.
Shmuel is the boy who is being held in Auschwitz. He becomes best friends with Bruno, but their friendship is really difficult because he is a Jew. Nobody can know!
C)
The book was really really really good in my opinion! It was a touching story filled with reality. It shows how horrible world war II was. You’ll see what really happened to the people in Auschwitz. You will also see that Bruno is an innocent boy, even tho his father works for the Fuhrer. I liked how the story was written. It was told by Bruno, but the words weren’t to childish. It was never boring to read, because the story kept being interesting: Bruno always discovered something new. Or he talked to Shmuel, and their conservations were really interesting. I have seen the movie of The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas too, but I liked the book better because you can make your own images and ideas in your head/you can use your own imagination. (For example: in your imagination Bruno has blonde hair with green eyes, but in the movie he has brown hair and blue eyes: the complete opposite!) The end of the book is really sad, because Shmuel and Bruno died in the gas chambers. It even made me tear up a little bit! I would definitely recommend this book to everyone! It is touching, realistic, interesting and written really good.

Literature ‘How to stop time'
A)
Title: How to stop time
Author: Matt Haig
Edition: 1/1
Pages: 325
Theme: Love, secrets, novel, history
Perspective: Tom Hazard, (the I-narrator)
Place: London (England)
Time: Different century's
B)
It is about Tom Hazard, a man who is 41 years old. He's not just a normal middle aged man, because he has been alive for centuries! After a few years he has to move to another city, to hide his secret. Tom moves back to London to become a history-teacher. He just has to focus on his job, and then he's going to move away again. That's his plan. But he cannot fall in love! In this book you get to read a lot of flashbacks. Because of that you will find out he has a daughter, who has the same disease as Tom. But they lost eachother. In order to get reunited with his daughter, he works for an organisation (the owner has the same disease). At the same time he meets a woman, a french teacher. Will he fall in love with her too?
Some extra information about the main characters:
Tom Hazard is a 41-year-old history teacher who has a rare disease. He lives way longer than a normal person does. He doesn't age. He can only die because of a bullet. In this book he's always really sad.
Camille is the french teacher Tom Hazard falls in love with.
Rose was Tom Hazards' wife. They had a daughter who has the same disease as Tom. Rose died at a young age.
Hendrich is the 'owner' of the company Tom works for. He helps Tom to live, but he made up one rule: 'Don't fall in love'.
C)
The book was good, but not my style. I am not that interested in history, but that came back in the book a lot. Athough (to me) it's not that interesting, the story however was original. I had never read something like this before. The fact that Tom Hazard had a child was a twist in the story. He had to leave his wife Rose and his daughter in the past due to safety, so he lost contact with his daughter. In this book, it's his goal to meet up with her. That was touching. Another twist in the story is that he falls in love with another woman, Camille. She ends up pregnant. The book itself was easy to read. Overall, I like the story of the book because it has a lot of unexpected twists. But the flashbacks didn't always interest me that much. Only the flashbacks about Rose and his daughter. So that was a weakness of the book.

Literature 'I'll get there. It better be worth the trip'
A)
Title: I’ll get there. It better be worth the trip.
Author: John Donovan
Edition: 1/1
Pages: 228
Theme: Sexuality, love, teen problems.
Perspective: Davy Ross, (the I-narrator).
Place: Manhattan
Time: 1969
B)
This book is about the 13 year old boy Davy Ross. He has lived with his grandmother since he was 5, but when she died he had to move back to his alcoholic mom. Davy doesn’t have much friends, until he meets Douglas at school. They begin to spend a lot of time together and eventually they kiss. Davy Ross thinks he’s homosexual, but his mom does not approve. He feels guilty and ashamed. This effects his relationship with Douglas.
Some extra information about the main characters:
Davy Ross is a boy that doesn’t have much friends –except for his dog-. He has a hard time adjusting to his new life.
Douglas Altschuler is a popular boy at their school. He (also) lives with his mom alone. He is gay.
C)
The book was in my opinion good to read. I liked how you got to know a lot about Davy’s life. You knew exactly how he felt throughout the story. The story line was very interesting, because there aren’t many books that are about sexuality. I liked that the mom was alcoholic, because it adds a twist to the story! The end was intense, because the relationship between Davy and Douglas was getting worse because of Davy’s mom. But Davy found his father, his father supported him, unlike his mother. The begin of the story/book was a little bit boring, but it changed further into the chapters.

Listening report, Elite
A)
I watched the last episode of Elité (8). The episode lasted 51 minutes. You can watch It on Netflix, it’s a Spanish Netflix-original serie! The subject of this episode/serie is ‘a murdered girl’.
B)
School prom – preparing escape - morocco – watch – relationship – competitive - force a locker – Marina Nunier – trouble – regret – Nano – thief - Polo – get the blood off – trophy – incident – calm down – police – killed – protect each other – my sister - lied – cameras – accident – motive – autopsy – daughter – Omar – bleeding to death – judges – Nano – murder weapon – no evidence – guilty – motive – Marina – Samuel – defense – Lucrecia – get down – blame – dead – hurts – pain – accused –Christian – best friend.
C)
Summary: In the last episode of ‘Elite’ you can see Marina trying to escape to Morocco with Nano. She’s pregnant from Nano after an one-night stand. Nano has a hard past, he spent most of his life in prison. Marina’s life isn’t easy either, so that’s why Nano came up with the plan to escape. But that plan is not going to happen, because Marina gets killed during school prom… Then there is Polo, the ex of Carla. Carla is in a steamy relationship with Christian now, so Polo is really jealous. He tries to win Carla back by stealing an important watch that Marina stole from Carla. It doesn’t end that well.. Polo kills Marina with a trophy. He’s desperate and tells it to Carla and Christian. They come up with an alibi for Polo so the cops don’t suspect him.
Carla: “Get rid of the trophy”. Christian: “POLO, CAN YOU TELL ME WHO’S NOT BREATHING? POLO!?” Polo: “Marina..”
Then there is a time-lapse, where you can see Gúzman, Marina’s brother, struggling with her death. He almost killed himself, but his ex stopped him.
Opinion: I really liked the episode! It was the best out of all 8. I couldn’t stop watching, cause it was getting more intense every minute. It sounds like a typical serie with teenage problems , but it’s really not because of the murder. Despite the fact that the murder is on the last episode, you can see a glimpse of it in earlier episodes. The actors were really good too! I recognized a few cast members from another serie ‘La casa de Papel’. That made my experience extra nice.

Listening report, Planet earth

C)
Summary: In this episode you saw a lot of animals! From little pikas to huge elephants. They showed you what they eat, and where they live. Pikas spend their time mostly underground. Before I watched it I didn’t even know what Pikas were! In this episode there were a lot of baby animals: little lion cubs, baby geese, calves from elephants etc. It was really cute. But baby animals are easy to hunt.. You saw a few babies getting killed which was really sad. But that’s nature of course! They showed a lot of different places around the world: the arctic tundra, African savanna, America, but also India and more!
Opinion: I liked this documentary very much. I really love animals and I think it’s very interesting to learn about new animals you never heard of before. Also you learn about their lifestyle which is also really interesting. Usually I don’t watch documentary’s that often, but I would watch one of ‘Planet Earth’ again. There was one disadvantage: Sometimes they used words I never heard of before, which made it more difficult to understand what he was saying. But overall the episode was fun to watch, and I learned a lot!

Listening report 3
Listening report, The Society
A)
I watched the 1th episode of a new serie on Netflix ‘The Society’. It lasted 56 minutes. It’s a Netflix original. It’s about teenagers that have to survive on their own in their city, because everybody left for an unknown reason. I think you will find out later in the serie.
B)
Weird smell – school – smell is back – students go camping – change of plans – back home – mom left – knocked out our data – alone – nothing beyond this place – no Wi-Fi – no 911 – roads blocked – stay alive – bit – hurts – help me – dead – church – gun – this isn’t home
C)
Summary: This episode was really exciting. All the students from a school all got into a bus to go on a camping trip. When it was late in the evening, they arrived. But when they saw where they stopped, they say they we’re back In town again. They all tried to call their parents to say that they we’re already home, but nobody picked up. It turned out that everyone had left town. All the teenagers are orphans now. The next day they saw that all the roads are blocked. There was no Wi-Fi and you could not call 911. A group decided to go In the woods to explore and maybe find another village. But it was really dangerous, someone got bit by a snake and died!
Opinion: I liked this first episode very much. It was really ‘scary’. Although I didn’t knew all the actors, I still think they we’re good. I like the story of this serie, because it’s original. It was intense all 56 minutes long! I am really looking forward to watch the next episode. But there is one disadvantage: the episodes are really long, I don’t have that much time. Overall, it was really fun to watch, the only bad thing is the duration of the episodes.

Listening report 4
Listening report, Madeleine Mccan
A)
I watched the 1th episode of a documentary about the disappearance of Madeleine Mccan. I have heard about Madeleine McCan before, so I thought this was interesting to watch. The episode lasts 58 minutes. It’s a Netflix original documentary. Like said before, it is about the disappearance of Madeleine Mccann.
B)
Abducted – child disappeared from bed – what happened? – Kate Mccann – Gerry Mccann – family holiday – Praia da Luz – Ocean club resort – leaving children alone – sleep – checked every 20 minutes – half past eight – tapas restaurant – bed was empty – window open – ‘someone took Madeleine’ – horrible – search – police – evidence apartment – trampled – saw man crossing – carrying child – investigation – journalists flew over – flyers of Madeleine – knock on doors – sniffer dogs – strange case - praying – no leads
C)
Summary: This episode was really serious and very sad. The parents went out to eat with some friend who also stayed in that resort, and let their children sleep alone in the apartment. They checked on their children every 20 minutes. When it was late in the evening, they noticed that Madeleine wasn’t in bed anymore. She was missing. Then the investigation and search started. In this episode you saw how all that went down. And how Praia da Luz changed into a crime scene..
Opinion: This episode was really interesting to me. The story is very touching and it’s sad that they still don’t know what really happened to Madeleine. I’ve heard this story before, but when you watch this documentary you will find out more things you didn’t know. So overall, it was really interesting.

Looking back on 2018:
2018 was a rough year but also really fun. It was rough because I had to deal with a lot of personal stuff and school is really hard. But also fun because I went to a concert of a boyband called Why Don’t We with my best friend Laura. It was amazing, we absolutely loved it, we sang the whole night! I also did something really fun with my other best friend Dewi. We went to Spain (Marbella) together. It has always been a dream of us to go on vacation together, and in 2018 it finally happened so we felt really happy! Something that was on the news for a long time in 2018 was the accident in Oss. It was really tragic, everyone talked about it..
Looking forward to 2019:
My New Year’s resolution is that I need to improve my grades at school. I learn a lot for school, but it’s still not good enough to pass the year. I also want to spend more time with family and friends, because I wasn’t able to do that enough in 2018 because of school etcetera. I look forward to the Shawn Mendes concert I am going to. I am also going on vacation to Bangkok and Koh Samui, I am really looking forward to that too! The thing I really want to do in 2019 is travel a lot!

School trip Barcelona
With school I went to Barcelona. We left on Sunday march 30th. We had to sit in the bus for twenty-four hours. When we finally arrived in Spain, we went to an old town Girona. Then we drove to the hotel. We got our rooms and unpacked our stuff. I shared a room with Maud, Mirte and Beyza. We had free time for ourselves. In the evening almost everyone went to a club. But we had to be back in the hotel at 12 AM so we left the club early.
The next day we went to Barcelona. We visited Camp Nou. It was really big, and a very cool experience. After this we went to Sagrada Famili. It was really beautiful! We still had a lot of time so we went to the Ramblas to shop. In the evening I sat at the beach with some drinks and food, it was really cozy.
The third day we went to Barcelona again. Park Guëll was really really cool. Everyone liked it. We had to answer some questions about the park itself. After that we went to the Ramblas again because the other events we wanted to visit were cancelled.
Then the last day had arrived.. We all packed our stuff and got in the bus. We stopped in Spain for a shopping centre, and after three hours of shopping we drove back to the Netherlands.
