Introduction

The subject of this double period  is relatives.

  • Form groups of three or four pupils.

Discuss the following questions in your group:

  • Where do your grand-parents live?
  • How many uncles and aunts do you have?
  • Where do your relatives live?

Step 1 - Listening

Family

You are going to listen to ten questions about relatives.

  • Listen to the recording.
  • While listening, think about the folllowing question:
    • Welke van de vragen zou je nu al in het Engels kunnen beantwoorden? Probeer ze ook daadwerkelijk te beantwoorden in de pauzes tussen de vragen.

Step 2 - Reading

Family and families
Before you start reading the text, discuss the following questions with a classmate.

  • How important is family for you?
  • Would you miss them if you lived far away?
  • Now read the following text and answer the questions.

I don’t live with my parents now because I’m married and live in New York. My mum and dad live in Rome and my husband’s parents live in Montreal, Canada. We are a little sad because we don’t see them a lot but when we get together we have a beautiful time.

One of my sisters lives in Rio, Brazil, and the other one, who is 16, is at home in Rome. My husband has only one brother. He is at home in Montreal. Next year he wants to go to Paris to study European history.
We got married one year ago in Rome.

All my family and his family were at the wedding. We had a fantastic time, and our honeymoon in Venice was beautiful. We would like to have a son and a daughter. We hope they’ll have a beautiful life, maybe in America, maybe in Africa or Asia or Europe.
  1. Would you like to be the writer?
  2. Would you like your family to live far away from you?
  3. Why or why not?
  4. Write down your answer in five lines.

Step 3 - Vocabulary

To be able to do all the assignments correctly, you need to know some words and sentences.
For each theme there are word lists ready in StudioWozzol, with which you can practice:

  • Study the vocabulary. (10 minutes)
  • Do the exercise.

Tip!
There are many ways to study vocabulary. You can read the words aloud or copy them. The most important rule is never to spend more than 10 minutes studying words. Every minute you spend longer is a waste of time.

Expressions: If you need some extra help, go to your StudioWozzol account and take another look at the chunks.
Now you are going to try to have a conversation with someone else.

  1. Find someone to work with and use the speech card A or B on page two.
  2. Write down a couple of words to help you during the conversation.
  3. Practise your conversation at least twice.

After practising twice, do the following things:

  1. Find another pair to work with.
  2. Act out your conversation.
  3. Let them act out their conversation and write down feedback for them.
  4. Let them do the conversation and write down feedback for them.
  5. Discuss what things were good and what you can do better next time.

Step 6 - Writing

An email about your relatives.
You are going to write an email to your pen pal from London.
Use the following prompts:

  • Say hello to your pen pal (think of a name).
  • Decide about who you are going to write: your grand-parents or uncles or aunts.
  • Give information about them (what do they look like, age, work ?)
  • Tell where they live.
  • Tell how often you visit them.
  • Tell what you do when you visit them.
  • Think of a question you could ask your pen pal.
  • Ask your pen pal to write about his/her relatives.
  • End your email.

What have you learnt in this double period?
Answer the following questions:

  • What was the easiest part of this lesson?
  • What did you already know?
  • What was the most difficult part?
  • What was new to you in this lesson?
  • What do you have to ask your teacher?
