6.3 Back to school - hv12

Back to school

Introduction

The subject of this double period is back to school.

  • Make groups of three or four.
  • Discuss these questions in English with your group:
    • How did you feel on your first day at secondary school?
    • What did you already know about your new school?
    • Who did you already know there?
  • Together, make a mindmap with 15-20 words that have to do with the first day of secondary school. Use four topics for the ‘arms’. One of them should be ‘emotions’.

Step 1 - Reading

First day at school

You are going to read a text in which Katy describes her experiences at a new school.

  • Read the text.
  • While reading, think about the following question:
    • Was Katy’s first year at her new school a positive or a negative experience? Look for examples in the text which support your opinion.

My experiences starting secondary school
The new school term has begun and lots of you have gone to secondary school for the first time. In her report Press Packer Katy shares her experiences of starting secondary school and offers some useful advice.

"I started a new school a year ago and I can't believe how quickly the year went!
I wasn't that nervous on my first day, I was really looking forward to it. I knew a bit about what to expect because I had an older sister at the same school.

It will be fine!
For anyone who's starting a new school, don't worry. The stories that you hear aren't usually true - I don't know anyone who's been bog-washed!
I've met lots of new people and made loads of new friends since I started.
I thought the work would suddenly get really hard but it was just like primary school really. I also thought that I'd be flooded with homework but the amount I got in my first year was quite easy to handle.

Katy's tips
Here's my advice for anyone who's worried about going to a new school:

  • Relax and think about all the positives of moving to secondary school
  • Don't be shy, introduce yourself to people!
  • Be yourself, don't try to brag because people might think you're big-headed

Good luck!"

Do the exercises.

Step 2 - Listening

At one high school, no one eats lunch alone

You are going to watch a video about an initiative to help lonely students.

  • Watch the video.
  • While watching, think about the following question:
    • Do you think this is a good initiative? Why (not)?

Do the exercise.

Step 3 - Vocabulary

To be able to do all the assignments correctly, you need to know some words and sentences.
For each theme there are word lists ready in Wozzol, with which you can practice:

Woordenlijst Back to school hv12

  • Study the vocabulary. (10 minutes)
  • Do the exercise.

Tip!
There are many ways to study vocabulary. You can read the words aloud or copy them. The most important rule is never to spend more than 10 minutes studying words. Every minute you spend longer is a waste of time.

Step 4 - Grammar

In het vorige blok heb je kennisgemaakt met de past simple. Weet je nog hoe het zat?

I wanted a new bike. – Ik wilde een nieuwe fiets.
Did you wait for him? – Heb je op hem gewacht?
Sam didn’t look good. – Sam zag er niet goed uit.

Bestudeer uit de kennisbank het onderdeel Past simple – regelmatige werkwoorden nog een keer. Denk na over deze vragen:

  • Hoe vraag je dit in het Engels: ‘Vond je de film leuk?’
  • Hoe zeg je dit in het Engels: ‘Ik heb mijn broer vorige week niet gemist.’

Past simple - regelmatige werkwoorden

Do the excercises.

Step 5 - Speaking

My first day at school

Have a conversation with a classmate. Use the description below.

Preparation

  1. Take a few minutes to prepare.
  2. Write down a couple of words and phrases to help you during the conversation.
  3. You will be asked to use the past simple correctly. Have another look at the theory in the Toolbox if necessary.

Having the conversations

  1. Find another pair to work with.
  2. Have your conversation.
  3. Ask your classmates to write down feedback for you.
  4. Next, let them have their conversation and write down feedback for them. Pay special attention to the correct use of the past simple.
  5. Discuss what went well and what you can do better next time.

Step 6 - Writing

Starting a new school

You have read a text about starting a new school. Now you are going to write an article for new students.

  • Start with a short introduction. What was your first day at secondary school like?
  • Describe the differences between primary and secondary school.
  • Give at least 3 pieces of useful advice for new students. If possible, use tips that have really helped you personally in your first year, or that you wish you had known about before starting secondary school.
  • For a conclusion, wish the new students luck.
  • Ask your teacher how many words you have to use.
  • Pay special attention to the correct use of the past simple.

Step 7 - Evaluation

What have you learnt in this double period?
Answer the following questions:

  • What was the easiest part of this lesson?
  • What did you already know?
  • What was the most difficult part?
  • What was new to you in this lesson?
  • Are there things you don't quite understand yet? How are you going to deal with them?
  • What do you need to ask your teacher?
