Step 1 - Listening

Shopping for clothes

You are going to listen to a conversation between a customer and a shop assistant.

  • Listen to the conversation.
  • While listening, think about the following questions:
    • In what country does the conversation take place?
    • What happens during the pause in the middle of the conversation?

Do the exercises.

Step 2 - Reading

Do you like shopping?

You are going to read four short texts in which people give their opinions about shopping.

  • Read the texts.
  • While reading, think about the following question: Which of the four shoppers is most like you? Make sure you can explain your answer.

Do you like shopping? Here’s what some of our readers think.

Aisha, 16
I like shopping, but it depends who I go with. Shopping with my mum is a nightmare! She and I have very different tastes and she always thinks that the clothes I want are too expensive. Personally, I’d rather have one nice piece of clothing than three cheap things! I don't like shopping with my boyfriend either, because he's always in a hurry. But shopping with friends is fun, and I like going on my own too.

Desiree, 15
I don't really enjoy shopping. When I go alone, I usually just run into a shop and buy the first thing I see in my size. I don’t even see the inside of a changing room. As a result, I’ve got a wardrobe full of awful 'mistakes' which I never wear. But I don't mind going with my girlfriend, because she helps me choose. She’s got great taste and she always knows exactly what suits me.

Emerson, 15
I hate going to the shops. My mum buys the essentials for me – underwear, socks, coats, that sort of thing – and I order my jeans, shirts and sweaters online. I try them on and if I like them, I keep them. If not I send them back. It takes a lot less time and I don’t have to deal with shop assistants. They’re always trying to sell me stuff and telling me something looks good on me when I know it doesn’t!

Tyler, 16
I love shopping, but I always do it alone. When I go with my friends or my dad, they get frustrated because they think I’m too slow or that I can’t decide. But I just like shopping around for bargains, so I take my time. Also, I don’t care about the latest fashion, so I love nosing around in second-hand clothes shops. I often get compliments about my unique style!

Do the exercises.

Step 3 - Vocabulary

Study the words and phrases well.
If you want, you can also study the vocabulary on Wozzol:

  • Study the vocabulary. (10 minutes)

Tip!

There are different ways to study vocabulary. Click the red arrow in Wozzol to select another way.
You can read the words aloud or copy them.
The most important rule is not to study for too long in one go, because you won't learn any more. You will learn more in two 10-minute sessions than in half an hour.

Step 4 - Grammar

Weet je het nog? De tegenwoordige tijd noem je in het Engels simple present.

Bestudeer in de kennisbank Engels wanneer en hoe je de simple present gebruikt.

Denk tijdens het lezen na over de volgende vraag: Welke vorm gebruik je bij he, she en it bij de volgende werkwoorden: do, cry, wish?
