Todd: Ah, I know, I'm really bad with my phone. I hate the phone. I can not stand the phone. I hate talking on the phone, so I have a hand-held phone and I always go and put it in the closet and I turn it off.
Simon: Oh, really! Yeah, you said hand-held. I usually call it a cell phone or a mobile phone. (Yeah) but, uh, well, I mean, these days everybody has one, so uh, I think they're quite useful actually. You can call people when you want, and you can call people who you want. You don't have to pick up like you don't sometimes, it's.
Todd: See the thing is, if somebody calls me, right, and I see that they called me, I feel really guilty for not calling them back, or no answering the phone if I'm very busy, so I don't want to feel guilty, so I just turn off the phone and put it in my closet.
Simon: Well, I guess that's why you like land lines, because you can pretend like you didn't hear it or that you weren't home at the time.
Todd: Exactly, I really miss the old style phones. The old phones that would ring and you'd have to walk over and pick up the phone. I thought those were great.
Simon: You know what, I think that you're just not going with progress. The old style, uh, life has changed, yeah, we use technology every day, and this is just the next step, you know, being able to communicate at all times, anywhere and anyhow, and we're using technology right now.
Todd: That's true, I mean, obviously I have my website, I'm very into computers. I love e-mail. I love Internet telephone like Skype but there's just something about hand-held phones that I don't like. I don't know why. I just don't like them.
Simon: OK, well, let's agree to disagree.

Video games are bad for you. The Internet is dangerous and uncontrolled. It’s like having a gun in the house. We should just ban her from using the computer, and I'm not buying her a cell phone until she is eighteen. This is the only way we can be sure that Marcia is safe."
Marcia’s dad disagrees with Marcia's mom. Although he agrees that there are some dangers to it, he likes the Internet, and finds it to be very useful. “The trouble is,” he says, “We just can’t stop Marcia from using the Internet, as this would put her at a disadvantage.
What is more, I like video games. I think that, when played in moderation, they are fun. Obviously, it is not good to play them without restraint or self-control. Finally, I think Marcia needs a cell phone. We can’t take these things away.”

Ofcom (the UK government communications regulator) says one in three adults, and most teenagers, classify themselves as highly addicted to their smartphones such as iPhones, Blackberrys and Androids.
Britons' appetite for Facebook and social networks on the go is driving a huge demand for smartphones - with 60% of teenagers describing themselves as "highly addicted" to their device - according to new research by the media regulator, Ofcom. Almost half of teenagers and more than a quarter of adults in the UK now own a smartphone, with most using their iPhone or BlackBerry to browse Facebook and email.
Smartphone sales outstripped sales of regular mobiles in the first half of this year as the enormous demand continues to rise. Just over half of the total 13.6m mobile sales from January to June 2011 were smartphones. Of the new generation of smartphone users, 60% of teenagers classed themselves as "highly addicted" to their device, compared to 37% of adults.
Ofcom surveyed 2,073 adults and 521 teenagers in March this year. The regulator defines teenagers as aged between 12 and 15, with adults 16-years-old and above. "Ofcom's report shows the influence that communications technology now has on our daily lives, and on the way we behave and communicate with each other," said James Thickett, Ofcom's director of research. "Our research into the use of smartphones reveals how quickly people become reliant on new technology - to the point of feeling addicted. As more and more people acquire smartphones, they are becoming an essential tool in peoples' social lives whether they are out with friends socialising or using Facebook on the move."
Facebook remains far and away the most popular website for mobile users, with users spending almost four times the amount of time socialising online than using Google or any other website. Unsurprisingly, multitasking teenagers said they were less likely to read books if they owned a smartphone.
The huge boost in smartphone sales has led to a 67% increase in mobile data use as phone users watched videos and sent emails on the go. Mobile operators, such as O2 and Vodafone, have been put under huge strain by the new load.
Despite being a nation of mobile addicts, Ofcom found that Britons are spending more time in front of the TV (four hours a day last year, compared to 3.8 hours in 2009). The new generation of broadband delivered by fibre-optic cables is now available for 57% of UK households - though just 500,000 have adopted it.
Those who own games consoles are most likely to use it for watching video content (22%), online gaming (22%), and watching DVDs (19%). Just over one in 10 said they browse the web via their games console, while 9% use it to watch BBC iPlayer. Britons sent an average of five text messages a day last year, contributing to a total of 129bn texts sent - up by 24% in 2009. Volgend jaar zal je eindexamen moeten doen. Daarom gaan we dit schooljaar oefenen met examens.
Een examen duurt twee klokuren. Je moet een heleboel teksten lezen en daar vragen over beantwoorden. Sommige teksten zijn heel kort, andere zijn wat langer en moeilijker. Aan het eind van een GT-examen zit een schrijfopdracht. Omdat je in het derde leerjaar zit, gaan we dit schooljaar oefenen met KB-examens.
Je krijgt eerst een paar tips.
Het examen dat je gaat maken, is opgeknipt in drie delen.

Voordat je een tekst begint te lezen, is het verstandig na te gaan wat je al weet over het onderwerp van de tekst, zonder dat je die tekst eerst hebt gelezen. Kijk naar de titel, de ondertitel, eventuele illustraties en tussenkoppen en een eventuele inleiding om achter het onderwerp te komen. Probeer vervolgens een voorspelling te doen over de inhoud. Dit geeft je houvast bij het lezen. Om een goede voorspelling te kunnen geven, is kennis van land en volk (Groot-Brittannië en de Verenigde Staten) geen overbodige luxe.
Hoe je een tekst leest, hangt af van het soort tekst en wat je ermee wilt. Begin niet zomaar een tekst te lezen, maar bedenk eerst welke informatie je uit die tekst wilt halen. Dit hangt natuurlijk ook af van de examenvraag die gesteld wordt. Soms is het nodig om een tekst gedetailleerd te lezen, omdat je doel is de tekst zo goed mogelijk te begrijpen en de examenvragen over gedetailleerde aspecten uit de tekst gaan. Een andere keer is het voldoende een tekst te scannen, omdat je doel is het vinden van bepaalde gegevens in de tekst.
Je leest niet alles wat er staat, maar je let bijvoorbeeld op bepaalde trefwoorden of symbolen.
Om teksten, maar ook vragen en eventuele meerkeuze-antwoorden goed te begrijpen, is het belangrijk dat je veelvoorkomende woorden en uitdrukkingen goed leert. Ook je kennis van signaalwoorden is erg belangrijk om het verband tussen zinnen (of delen van zinnen) onderling en tussen verschillende alinea's aan te geven.
Leer de verbindingswoorden zoals moreover, furthermore, also, yet, although enz. om de verbanden tussen de alinea's makkelijk te herkennen.
Realiseer je het volgende: het is geen kennistest, maar een leestest! Als je veel van het onderwerp van een tekst afweet, realiseer je dan dat je de schrijver niet hoeft te corrigeren. Als er bijvoorbeeld gevraagd wordt waarvan de maan gemaakt is en in de tekst staat dat de maan van kaas is, dan is dat op dat moment zo en zal je bij de antwoorden toch echt 'kaas' moeten invullen. Het gaat er om wat er in de tekst staat!
Lees bij 'bijsluiters' of 'recensies' altijd eerst de vraag. Dit scheelt je tijd, want je hoeft dan alleen dat betreffende stukje tekst te lezen om de vraag goed te kunnen beantwoorden.
Wordt er gevraagd naar de 'kern' van een alinea, dan kun je deze vaak vinden in de eerste of laatste zin van die betreffende alinea.
