Deze leesteksten gaan over mensen die met elkaar in contact komen.

We wish you pleasant reading!

Tips

Lottie vertelt over haar vader.
Wat klopt wel en wat klopt niet?

  • Lottie is nine years old.

His hair is black and grey. He's got green eyes'. I've got green eyes too!

My dad gets up early most days.
He makes our breakfast and sometimes he takes me to school.
My dad is a teacher. He doesn't teach children.
He teaches other people who work with him.
My dad gets home at 5 o'clock. Sometimes I help him cook our meal.
After dinner my dad sometimes helps me with my homework.

Today he is helping me with maths. I like maths!
In the evening we sometimes watch TV. Or my dad reads. He loves reading.
At the weekends we do different things. Last weekend we went to a concert.
My dad loves music. It's great living with my dad.

Jonathan
"Oh, my dream house? It is on the beach. You have a great view of the ocean and the beach, and it should be really big - a big house - with maybe an elevator, and maybe at least three cars and a cinema in the house as well.
That would be cool."

Cheryl
"To describe my dream house: it would actually be very simple.
It would probably be a small apartment in a large city with a lot of
things to do - maybe in Barcelona or some city like that.
It would probably be a simple apartment in an entertainment,
nightlife district with lots of culture around and a very lively scene."

Jeanette
"I would like to have a house big enough for me and my family.
The house must be in a quiet area and near public transportation.
The house must be close to schools and stores.
The house should have a basement and an attic.
It should have a yard for my kids to play.
It must have two bathrooms and a dining room.
The house does not have to be new, but it must be
nice and attractive."

Cinderella
Cinderella lived with her stepmother and two stepsisters, who were jealous of her and treated her very badly.
She had to spend all day, every day doing work around the house.
One day an invitation arrived from the prince, who was having a ball.
Cinderella had to help her stepmother and stepsisters make beautiful dresses for the ball, and on the night they went off and left the poor girl alone. She was very sad, but suddenly her Fairy Godmother appeared and
turned Cinderella’s old clothes into a beautiful gown.
She turned a pumpkin into a golden coach and some mice into lovely black horses and a rat into a coachman.
So Cinderella went to the ball, but her Fairy Godmother warned her that she had to leave the ball by midnight.

When the prince saw Cinderella he thought she was so beautiful that he danced with her all evening.
Suddenly the clock began to strike twelve, and Cinderella remembered what her Fairy Godmother had told her. She ran out of the palace and was in such a hurry that one of her glass slippers came off as she was racing down the stairs.
The prince found the slipper and ordered his servants to go out into his kingdom and make every girl try the slipper on until they found its owner.
Eventually they arrived at Cinderella’s house and discovered that the slipper fitted her.
They took her back to the palace and she married the prince and they lived happily ever after.

Young people now text so much they hardly ever talk to each other. Children and teenagers are much more likely to tap out a text than actually pick up their phone and call someone, research has shown. Texting has more than doubled since March 2002, and it's still rising.

Some of the most common reasons to text someone are to send a greeting or flirt. More than eight out of 10 young people admitted they preferred texting to actually speaking to friends and family. But only 14 per cent of people over the age of 55 said they chose texting over speaking.

  • I learn a lot about France or what my friends enjoy doing.
  • ......what I've been doing over the last few weeks.
  • My auntie still writes to her French pen pal that she got at school.
  • I would strongly recommend getting a pen pal.

Lees nu de tekst.

Most people would be content with having one pen pal - but not Emma.
She's got two friends that she loves writing to.
In her report she tells us why it's pair-fect!

"I have two pen pals. One is called Alana.
Alana was my friend until she moved away.
The other is Ophelie, the pen pal that my school gave me.
She lives in France.  I usually write letters to Alana as she doesn't live as far away.
But most of the time I e-mail Ophelie, as it takes so long if I don't!
I write to my pen pals about once a month.

Learning
I really look forward to getting letters or e-mails from my pen pals because I learn
a lot about France or what my friends enjoy doing.
I learn about their lives and it gives me something to look forward to.
Having two pen pals also really improves my writing skills.
I write about hobbies, family, school and what I've been doing over the last few weeks.

Visits
I think one of the best parts of having pen pals is when they come over to stay.
I have never had a visit from Ophelie, but I am really looking forward to her visit with her school in June.
The worst thing about having pen pals is the wait for a reply, and when letters get stuck in the post!
My auntie is 40 and she still writes to her French pen pal that she got at school.

Juggling
I never get bored with my pen pals.
It's not hard juggling two because they rarely write at the same time and I enjoy writing.
I would strongly recommend getting a pen pal to those who don't have one. I've got two!"

  • How much is a quid worth in England?

  • Where in the UK can you use the Euro?

Lees nu de tekst.
Maak na het lezen van de tekst het lijstje met munten en biljetten.
Doe dan de Exercise.

All about money

The British currency is the pound sterling. The sign for the pound is £.
GBP=Great British Pound

We do not use the Euro. Although a few of the big shops will accept Euro, it is rarely used across Britain. Since decimalisation in 1971, the pound has been divided into 100 pence.

The singular of pence is "penny". The symbol for the penny is "P"; hence an amount such as 50p is often pronounced "fifty pee" rather than "fifty pence".

We have both coins and banknotes.
Current coins are:

1 penny, 2 pence, 5 pence, 10 pence, 20 pence, 50 pence, 1 pound and 2 pounds.

Current bank notes are:

The 5 pound note, the 10 pound note, the 20 pound note and the 50 pound note.

Old money conversions to money used today
  • Six pence - 2,5p
  • One shilling (or 'bob') - 5p
  • Half a crown (2 shillings and sixpence) - 12,5p
  • One guinea - £1.05

Where can I find information on shops in England?
Are most stores open on weekends?

Introduction
Not only are we, in the words of Napoleon, 'a nation of shopkeepers', we are also a country of compulsive shoppers. we love to shop! It is our number one leisure activity and accounts for around 37% of all money spent in England.

The main shopping street in many towns is called the high street, where you should head for if you want to go shopping. A few small shops are owned by local people. Most are owned by national 'chains' of stores. This makes many ton centres look the same. Some towns also have street markets where fresh food and cheap goods can be bought. Away from the town centre, small 'corner' shops provide groceries to local customers.

Peak shopping days are Saturdays and Sundays.
Shops are generally open on Bank Holidays(see below). Bank Holidays are a great time to shop as there are many sales on especially around Easter and Christmas.

Shopping hours
In England, most retail shops are generally open 6 or 7 days a week.

Typical opening times are:
Mondays-Saturdays 9am to 5:30pm Some shopping centres stay open until 8pm or later.
Sunday - 10am to 4pm (or 11am to 5pm) Sunday shopping has become popular in recent years and most large shops in towns are open for business. Shops are only allowed to trade for 6 hours on Sundays.

Large supermarkets are open for 24 hours except for Sundays.

Many supermarkets and superstores otherwise open from 8am until 10pm from Mondays to Saturdays and 10am to 4pm (or 11am to 5pm) on Sundays.

Public Holidays / Bank Holidays
On public holidays some shops open and some shops do not. As a general rule banks will be closed, most supermarkets and large stores will be open (although with reduced Sunday opening hours), and in larger towns many shops will open.

Bank Holiday Shop opening times 10am to 4pm (or 11am to 5pm)

Over the Christmas and New Year period, all shops are closed on Christmas Day (December 25) and a some shops are closed on New Year's Day (January 1). However, an increasing number of shops are now opening on Boxing Day (December 26), which is when many start their 'New Year' sales.

It is likely that most shopping centres will be closed on Easter Sunday and there will be reduced shopping hours on Easter Monday (often from either 10 or 11 o'clock in the morning).

In Villages
Some rural shops still follow the tradition of an early closing day(usually Wednesday) when the shops close at 1.00pm.

Banking Hours
The major high street banks in England and Wales are Lloyds, Barclays, Midland and National Westminister (Nat West). In Scotland they are the Bank of Scotland, the Royal Bank of Scotland and the Clydesdale Bank.

Generally Monday-Friday 9;30 am-3:30 pm. Some branches stay open until 5:30 pm and a few are open Saturday morning.

Most banks will have an ATM (Automated Teller Machine) outside the bank where you can draw out money with a credit or cash card. Many of these are available to use 24 hours a day, but some do still close for a few hours during the night.

Largest Shopping Centre
Bluewater is the largest out of town shopping development in Europe, located in a disused chalk pit at Dartford in Kent. With more than 300 shops and parking for 13,000 cars, it attracts around 30 million visitors each year.

Open: Monday to Friday: 10am- 9pm
Saturday: 9am - 8pm
Sunday: 11am - 5pm

  • Kathy's advies: "Don't brag." Wat zou dit betekenen?

Lees nu de tekst.

My experiences starting secondary school
The new school term has begun and lots of you have gone to secondary school for the first time.
In her report Press Packer Katy shares her experiences of starting secondary school and offers some useful advice.
"I started a new school a year ago and I can't believe how quickly the year went!
I wasn't that nervous on my first day, I was really looking forward to it.
I knew a bit about what to expect because I had an older sister at the same school.

It will be fine!
For anyone who's starting a new school, don't worry.
The stories that you hear aren't usually true - I don't know anyone who's been bog-washed!
I've met lots of new people and made loads of new friends since I started.
I thought the work would suddenly get really hard but it was just like primary school really.
I also thought that I'd be flooded with homework but the amount I got in my first year was quite easy to handle.

Katy's tips
Here's my advice for anyone who's worried about going to a new school:
  • Relax and think about all the positives of moving to secondary school
  • Don't be shy, introduce yourself to people!
  • Be yourself, don't try to brag because people might think you're big-headed

Good luck!

Learning a Language

Reading a poem
Lees het gedicht.

Learning a language
is like doing a jigsaw puzzle
of a million pieces
with a picture that keeps changing.
It's like getting lost in a foreign city

It's like playing tennis without a ball,
like being an ant in a field of grasshoppers.
It's being an acrobat with a broken leg,
an actor without a script,
a carpenter without a saw,
a storyteller without a middle or an end.

But then gradually
it's like being out in the early morning
with the mists lifting.
It's like a chink of light under a door,
like finding the glove you were looking for,
catching the train you thought you were going to miss,
getting an unlooked-for present,
exchanging a smile.

And then one day it's like riding a bicycle
very fast downhill.

Jacob the Great

Jacob hated finishing things almost as much as he loved starting them. As a result, he had got into a million hobbies and activities, but he never stuck with any of them long enough to get any good.

He begged his mother for months for a guitar so that he could play Black Eyed Peas songs to Angie, a girl whom he liked, but after he finally got one for Christmas, he found out that guitars doesn't play themselves. He took a few lessons, but strumming the strings hurt his fingers and he didn't like holding the pick, so now the five-hundred dollar guitar lives under his bed.

After reading an add in the back of one of his comic books, Jacob decided that he wanted a Wonder-Sweeper 5000 metal detector, so that he could find buried pirate treasures. So he mowed lawns all summer and didn't spend his money on ice-cream like his younger brother, Alex. He saved it all in a shoe box in his closet. Then he shovelled driveways all winter, and he didn't spend his money on candy and chips like his classmates. By the time spring came he had saved $200, and he purchased the Wonder-Sweeper 5000 metal detector. He beeped it around the park for a while, be he soon found out that no pirates had ever set sail in his neighborhood, and if they had they didn't leave any treasure. Even though he found a key ring, forty-seven cents, and all the bottle caps he could throw, he buried the metal detector in his closest.

Given Jacob's history with hobbies, it was no surprise that Jacob's father was reluctant to buy him a magician's kit for his birthday. "Geez, Jacob... You sure you wouldn't rather I got you more guitar lessons?" He suggested. Jacob was insistent. "Dad, you've got to get me the magician's kit. This time I'll stick with it for real. I promise! Come on, Dad," Jacob begged. Jacob's father sighed and then replied, "Oh, I don't know, Jacob. Things are awfully tight right now." But Jacob's father was reminded of his own youth long ago, when he quit from football and started karate practice before hardly getting his equipment dirty. So when Jacob's birthday came around, Jacob was both surprised and pleased to find the magician's kit that he had desired so badly with a big bright bow on it.

Jacob opened up the box and unwrapped the many parts in the kit. As he did so, he imagined sawing his pet cat in half and putting it back together to the amazement of his friends and family. He took the many fake coins, trick cards, and rope pieces of varying length on the kitchen table and imagined pulling rabbits out of his hat and turning them into pigeons with a mysterious puff of smoke. As Jacob continued pulling plastic thumbs, foam balls, and giant playing cards out of the magic kit, a commercial on the TV caught his attention. "Hey kids! Have you ever wanted to go to space? Experience what it's like to be an astronaut? Do you want to explore the universe? Well, now you can." As the commercial continued play, Jacob walked away from the magic kit on the kitchen table and stared at the TV screen longingly. "For only $195 you can go to space camp and live life like an astronaut for a whole weekend. Enroll now for a once in a life time experience." Jacob's cry rang throughout the house as he yelled, "MOM!" He now knew what his true purpose in life was.

New York City bans the sale of supersize fizzy drinks
New York City has become the first place in the United States to ban the sale of supersize sugary drinks.
The new law will make it illegal to sell fizzy drinks in cups bigger than half a litre.
The former city's Mayor, Michael Bloomberg, wanted to bring in the ban to tackle obesity but lots of people aren't happy about it.
One New York business owner said: "We are smart enough to make our own decisions about what to eat and drink."
Groups who are against the new law say they'll continue to fight against it being introduced.
Diet drinks and fruit juices aren't included in the ban so can still be sold in bigger sizes.
Restaurants who break the rules could be fined up to £120.
